You all have inspired me! I started couch to 5 K, 5 weeks ago. I was nervous beginning week 5. The first day went well and I thought....looking ahead, that I should spend a week doing each of the days. So weds I started out the run of 5 mins, at five mins I felt pretty good so I decided to keep going and made the 8 mins. So I completed the second day. My goal today is the 20 mins run, I can feel myself getting anxious already. Funny because I run on a treadmill in my own home and know logically I can get off anytime I need to. It brings home the idea that most of our blocks are mental....either perceived or fear from a past experience. I think it is so important to be easy on ourselves, I find this very hard to do sometimes, too many expectations. The same way with eating, I tend to be an all or nothing thinker. I have to focus on finding the balance. When I gave myself permission to stop the run at 5 mins but challenged myself to just keep going until I couldn't made the 8 mins fly by and felt good on two accounts. I made the goal and didn't feel pressured. Anywho... today is 20 mins..... ?no pressure!!!!

mary, how did your 20-minue run go?
I didn't finish it the first time I tried. In fact I got injured. I recovered though and went on to finish the program, so if you had trouble don't get discouraged.

I'm glad to hear that you didn't give up completely. Starting week 5 over is probably a good thing. It will give you more training and more confidence too.
Keep us posted!

you know it felt so good to have accomplished those 20 mins. So I started week 6, mon OK run, but tired after. Wed tried day two and failed, my legs felt like lead, it was so weird. So fri/sat I just walked. Have you all hit the "wall" before, I am feeling really tired lately, maybe a little bug coming on. It was just so depressing. I just don't understand why.

Yes, I've ahd days where my legs didn't want to move and I felt really tired. I gave myself a couple of days of rest and then started again. If you need to fall back to walking in-between runs for another week or so, that's OK. In fact week 6 is designed that way.
Dont get down on yourself. It's actually part of the process. Your body needs to rest a bit after that longer run. In a week or two you'll be feeling stronger.

I hope this post will bump this thread up where people will see it.
I got a GPS running trainer, which I planned to just use as a sophistocated pedometer. Being a gadget lover, I needed to play around with it and got inspired to program it with the Couch-to-5K workouts. Now I've used it to do the first week of the program. I feel very empowered and love the workouts so far. I've NEVER been able to run. Exercise induced asthma as a kid, and a bad knee as a young adult. My knee has been great since I lost my weight, and hasn't deteriorated with the lbs I've gained back in the last year.
I did notice that I was starting to get a stitch in my side during the final 1 minute jog of the workout today, which was my 3rd workout of the first week. Should I still move ahead to week 2 or should I do the week 1 workout another time or two until I can do it without this occuring? What causes this and what should I do to prevent it?
Thanks for your advice.

Just thought I'd post (though it's so slow here this time of year who knows when or if anyone will see it).
I'm progressing through Couch-to-5K, though not with my GPS running trainer. I've moved indoors to a treadmill, having joined a gym for the first time in 10 years (not counting Curves 2 years ago). I'm LOVING IT!
I have completed 5 weeks of C25K, and did the 20 minute run today. That's the longest non-stop run I've EVER done in my life. I wasn't sure I'd be able to, and I just kept talking myself through going for another 30 seconds before slowing down the treadmill, then when I next thought about slowing down, it was several minutes later. My HR was pretty high, and my pace wasn't very fast (4.3 mph) but I did it!
Haven't had any problems with side stitches since the end of week 1 when I last posted.

Ema,
As a fellow non-runner, I'm inspired by your progress. What little running I have attempted, I have enjoyed. I have done a couple short community "fun runs" and one "rugged trails" 5k, which nearly left me out in the desert as buzzard bait.
With the idea of "one more time," I downloaded the pod casts from the link you provided in another post. I think I can now get back on track with the Couch to 5k program. On previous attempts, I would get to week 3 and lose interest. I think it will be easier for me if someone else is watching the clock and cuing the intervals.
Today I did week 1, Day 1 on the treadmill at my gym. I felt great afterward and continued brisk walking for another 20 minutes.
Thanks again, Ema, and keep us posted on your running.
Becky
