I finished week 4 today! The 5 minute runs were pretty tough, but I did it! I'm almost afraid to look ahead to what's in store for week 5. I'll admit it's getting a little easier, and my jeans are looser! Marcia

Way to go, Marcia!
I am going to have to repeat Week 4 next week. I have been sick. As soon as this head cold is gone, I will get back on track! (I'm bummed about not finishing the week, because I was having so much fun and feeling so strong . . . and my jeans are looser, too!)

Week 4 is going to take a long time for me. Today I started day 2 and once again, as soon as I started running, my knee started hurting.
I did an hour on the steep incline treadmill and hopefully that will help strengthen my knee. It doesn't hurt at all when I'm walking or even climbing at 40% incline, but running makes my knee talk to me.
I'll catch up with y'all someday... Becky

Hellooooo, anybody out there? I'm anxious to hear about everyone's progress!
I got back on the treadmill today for the first time in more than a week. I decided to start over with Week 4, after being sidelines with a bad cold. Just a note: The first two days I had done the 3 minute and 5 minute jobs, it was outside, complete with hills and hard sidewalk. Today I was on the treadmill, and I must report that running on a treadmill is really much easier (although not as interesting!). I tweaked the program a little, and ran half a mile, walked half a mile, then ran half a mile again, walked half, then ran 3 minutes, walked 90 sec, ran 5 min, walked a quarter of a mile to cool down. Total was 3 miles; not sure how many minutes (I had to take a bathroom break halfway through -- another advantage of the treadmill!)
Let me know how you all are doing!

Coco,
Sounds like you're doing great! I know, running outside is definitely more of a challenge than the treamill and definitely not as boring.
I thought I had hit the three-mile mark and I was all excited. Then I decided to measure my route by my car, to make sure my pedometer is right. Well, turns out I was only running a little over two miles. I was measuring time more than distance and I'm nowhere near a 10-minute mile, apparently. So it's kind of back to the drawing board for me.
We had snow last night so I will try to get to the gym later and run there.

I'm still stuck on week 4, day one. My knee starts talking to me as soon as I start running or jogging, no matter how well I've warmed up first.
I did an hour of incline intervals on the treadmill 4 times last week and again today. Knee feels great as long as I'm walking. I talked to a trainer about it and he suggested a few strength training exercises, specifically for my knees, so I've been doing that in addition to my regular workouts. He also mentioned I might need new shoes.
Even though I'm at goal, it might also help my knees if I lost a few more pounds. I might have to break down and ask my doctor to look at it, too. A friend just had his knee scoped and said he noticed the difference the next day.
Anyway, I haven't given up, just taking a little break. Becky

Nikki, Don't be discouraged. You are running for 30 minutes, and that is a huge accomplishment. You will work up to a ten minute mile.
I am running at 5.0 mph with spurts here and there up to 6.0.
Did Week 4, Day 2 today. It was soooo much harder at 6 in the morning.
Becky, you are an inspiration -- even though you are having knee trouble, you haven't given up the fight. I hope the doctor can help resolve the problem. I sometimes have trouble with one of my knees, too, but it usually only lasts a day. I'm doing some strength training for it, too. What exercises did your trainer recommend?

Coco,
I'm doing the seated leg extension machine, but focusing on the top of the range of motion with extra weight. It pinpoints the supporting muscles on either side of the knee. Forgive me for not knowing the names.
I'm hanging in there. It's the price I pay for waiting until I'm past 50 to start getting fit. Someday, I want to enter and finish a mini-tri. The swimming and biking are not nearly as challenging for me.

Week 4 is complete! Woo-hoo! This morning it was much easier. I got to the gym earlier and secured a treadmill in the "Women only" area, where there is a TV with sound and a treadmill with a water bottle holder (some of the older ones at my gym don't have those!). Those two things made all the difference to my state of mind! The time flew by. I'm going to jog again on Saturday; I may begin Week 5 then and do it outside (hopefully I can find a sort of flat stretch!).

Well, I got through week 4, day 2 today without any pain in my knee. The strength training and a little rest has paid off. I will probably repeat week 4 after I complete it, just to take it slowly.

Wow, I am WAY behind... but hope I can join you guys! I did the first day yesterday! I tried this program 5 years ago, got impatient, and jumped ahead to straight running. Before long, I had a bad knee and had to quit altogether! This time I plan to take it slow, and add in weight-training to strengthen my knee. Hope y'all will wait for me while I try to catch up...

Did my first day Friday down at a nearby park... nice, soft trails and green grass views. I'm lucky to be living in California where we can always exercise outdoors, though sometimes we may get drenched! My right knee already showed signs of bothering me! Not a good sign. So... I did my second day at the gym, on an elliptical trainer. (Much easier to keep track of your time on a machine, isn't it?) I did the brisk walking parts on Level 3, about 120 steps per minute, and the jogging parts on Level 4, 150 spm. This worked great for me and my knee didn't bother me one bit. Really go my heart rate up, too! I'd much rather be outside in the freshness, but it's not worth wrecking my joints...

Welcome, Jen! I'm in CA, too. I'm so glad you have joined us! I did Week 5, day 3 today (I think! I'm getting confused about all the changing workouts...). I was supposed to run 20 minutes OR two miles. Well, I ran the 20 minutes, which was just over 1.5 miles (I "run" at 5 mph -- really a verrrrry slow jog!) I was proud of myself, though. In week 6 it looks like the workouts keep changing every day. Very confusing! But probably good. For instance, on Sunday, I will a workout that consists of some shorter runs, and then work up to (I think) running 22 or so minutes by the end of the week.

Hi all, I pretty much got stuck at week 5 day 1 I think it was. I had a bad chest cold and sore throat and just couldn't stand the running part. I'm better now, so maybe can get to the gym this afternoon and see just where I am in the program. Good luck to all. Marcia

Coco, Thanks for the welcome! You guys are all doing great. Since my last post I'm not really doing the program... Instead I've been doing 30 minutes on various aerobic machines at the gym, followed by 5 min. cooldown. I usually do some kind of an intervals program to keep things interesting. My knees are doing pretty well so far. I'm strength training on the side and, who knows, after a few months maybe my knees will be strong enough to venture out on the road again!
