Well, I've moved on to Week 6. The pleasant surprise is that today's workout was actually easier than Friday's. On Friday, I jogged for 20 minutes straight; today's workout was to jog 5, walk 3, jog 8, walk 3, jog 5. To me, that seemed much easier. My dirty little secret is that if I am going uphill and I get too tired, I just turn around and jog back down for awhile! On the treadmill, obviously, this is a non-issue.
Anyway, I'm feeling great, and hope to get through the boredom of the next couple of looooong jogs which will have to be done on the treadmill, due to my early-morning exercise schedule this week. Sigh.

Today, I finally finished week 4 and I will probably do week 4 again, maybe a little faster.
A customer at work challenged me to enter a 2 mile Fun Run next Sunday. He's an avid runner recovering from a running injury and needs to come back slowly. I agreed. This will be my first entry in an event of any kind. It should be fun.

I am sure I am a little behind some of you all, but I found this thread and decided to start the program! My hubby will be doing it with me too. I started today... it wasn't too bad. It makes sense that as your body adjusts, it will be easier to run longer, too. I sure hope this works because I've always admired people who could run/jog for a long time!

Welcome to all the new runners and good going everyone else! I've been away for a while....I had a death in the family (grandfather) and my diet and exercise kind of took a back seat for the last two weeks. I did get out and run yesterday, about two miles. I need to start working myself up to three miles. I am thinking of signing up for a 5k in May and I would like to be able to complete it. I may try to get out and run again tomorrow, depending on the weather.
Keep up the good work, ladies!

Nikki, welcome back! I just noticed your black cat. I have one, too. His name is Frederick and he weighs about 15 pounds. He's quite a presence.
Yesterday, I ran 2.25 miles on the treadmill. I am very proud of myself, and psyched up for my next run tomorrow, which will be 2.5 miles or 25 minutes. Since I hope to do it outside, I won't really know exactly how far I will have gone. In my experience, running outside is physically much more difficult than running on the treadmill. But more fun.

Coco, Actually, that cat is gray, but I do have a black cat also. They're brother and sister. While the black cat is kind of petite, the gray one weighs about 22 pounds, I think . Talk about a presence. Good going on the 2.25 miles! I know running outside is more of a challenge, but I agree, it's much more fun than running on the treadmill. I am going to the gym today, but I won't run until tomorrow. I think today is a spinning day and maybe a body pump day. Let us know how your 2.5 miles goes! Nikki

Today was my first ever, organized running event. I did a 2-mile fun run and actually finished! And under 24 minutes. My only running has been on the treadmill at my gym, and stuck on week 4 of the Couch to 5k.
I'm very pleased with myself and with my friend that talked me into entering. Now I have to drag myself to work.
I'll start week 5 tomorrow, if I'm not sore.

Wow, Becky, that's great! I think I would hold off a day, though, before you begin week five. I just sent in my check for a 5k run in May. I have never run an organized event, either, and I don't really know if I can actually run 3.11 miles. But I'm hoping by May I'll be able to.

Well, I think I'm having a little setback. I am on Week 6. On Sunday, I ran outside for 25 minutes (on a gentle downhill slope!). On Monday, I rode the stationery bike for 30 minutes. Tuesday and Wed. I did not exercise. So today I went to the gym, and could "only" run 1.5 miles. Granted, I did let myself off easy, because I just felt too tired and it didn't feel right. I sometimes get an irregular heartbeat, and I felt like that might happen. (Yes, I am making an appt. to see the doctor.)
So I'll stick with Week 6 as long as it takes. I am not letting this get me down, because my "new" approach to exercise is that something is better than nothing. In the past, if I couldn't constantly show improvement, I would get discouraged and quit. Not this time. If it only feels good to exercise for 30 minutes, that's what I'll do. I know the rest will come, a little at a time.

Coco, Listen to your body. If you can only do 30 minutes of exercise, then so be it. There are definitely days that I go and run for 20 minutes on the treadmill and get bored or just tired and quit. But hey, at least 20 minutes is better than zero minutes, right? Nikki

Well, today I ran for at least 26 minutes on the treadmill, and I varied the speed a little while I did it (mostly 5mph, with spurts up to 6mph). I ran on the treadmill at the gym, with the TV blaring to keep me from getting too bored. I may try again tomorrow outside if the rain stops. Nikki, I totally agree -- ANY amount is better than nothing. That philosophy is what is keeping me from feeling burned out. This time, slow and steady WILL win the race! (And trust me, I'm about as slow as they come )

Hey all! I repeated week one last week- tried to get my hubby to join me, which is why I repeated it. That didn't work. So, I am on to week 2 this week and loving it!! I think I've got tendinitis in my knee, which is actually probably being irritated by my step aerobics class.... it doesn't hurt while doing the activity, but it is in pain during the rest of the day! Anyone else have this problem?

Howdy Couch to 5Kers! How is everybody doing?
I have had an exercise slump. When I went on vacation a couple of weeks ago, my exercise was mostly walking on the beach and around theme parks. Actually, it must've been awesome exercise, because I did lose weight that week.
Then last week, I felt swamped by work and life in general, and did not exercise, except one time to jog with my DD who was stressing about having to run the mile at school that week. I wanted her to see that she *could* run a mile without stopping, so we did it together.
So today was my first run in quite a while. I ended up getting in a great workout, but I am definitely not sticking to the Couch to 5K program at this point. Somewhere along the way, I realized that I just want to run, at whatever pace and however long is possible for me. Today I: warmed up by walking 5 minutes; jogged 10 minutes; walked 7 minutes; ran 11 minutes; walked 7 to cool down. My legs feel like jelly, but I feel good.
How 'bout you? Tell us about your last run!

I just started couch to 5K this week. I could only run for a minute at a time. I walked 3-4 minutes and ran for 1 minute. I had a 5-minute warm-up walk and a 10-minute cool-down walk followed by stretching. I did 5 running intervals in total the first day (Monday).
Today, I increased my running intervals by 15 seconds each. I figure at this rate, I'll be ready for week 1 next week sometime.

Hey, ladies. I haven't posted over here in a while, but I just thought I would share that I signed up for my first 5k this coming Saturday (May 7th)! I am excited but a little nervous about it...I know I can make it, and I'm sure I won't be in the top three, but I just don't want to come in last. I tend to run pretty slow and I have very short legs, so that doesn't help. Anyway, wish me luck!
