Good luck with your 5k run. You'll do great.
I have my first 5k coming up later this month, on the 25. I haven't been training much lately, but I think I'll be ready. It will be fun, no matter what.

Thanks, Becky. I haven't been training much, either, but I know I'm ready, too. I will get a good run in tomorrow, and then whatever happens on Saturday happens.
Keep us posted with your 5k!!

Wow, I'm nowhere near ready to run a 5k. I'm STILL on week one (about ready to move to week 2 next week, I think).
I've never been very good at running even when I was a kid and pretty fit. I was never able to finish the 600 yard run we had to do in elementary school. I guess it will just take me longer to build up to running longer than 90 seconds at a time. I can do it on the treadmill but out on the road, it's a lot harder.

You know what, I NEVER could run, either. I have never been very athletic and I always HATED running in school. The program really works, though, if you follow it. I still have trouble pushing myself to complete the full three miles, even though physically I know I can. I am very slow and sometimes a little lazy . Running outside is definitely physically harder, but I find it easier to do, since the treadmill bores me to death. If you stick to the program, you will surprise yourself. I know I did.

I never ran before, either. Even though I was rather athletic many, many years ago, running was never one of my sports. To my advantage, no matter how heavy I got, I was never afraid to walk, and could walk without tiring for long distances, just slowly.
At first, I had some pain in my knees, learning to run, but a trainer has helped me with strength training and that has made a big difference. I take it very slowly. I'm still doing week 5...for about the third time... It will be a big victory for me to maintain a steady pace without slowing to a walk.
If I can do this, just about anybody can, if they go slowly.

I DID IT, ladies!! I'm so proud of myself I just wanted to share. I didn't come in last, either, although there weren't too many people behind me. I ran the whole way (no walking) and my time was 31.48. I'm happy with it. There's another one coming up in two weeks the next town over and I'm considering running in that one, too. It was a lot of fun, and I would like to beat my time, even by a few seconds. Anyway, I just wanted to say that if I can run a 5k, anyone can! Nikki

Wow! That was pretty good time! Congratulations, Nikki!
I'm up to 2 minute intervals now and by the end o this tthis week I should be at 2:30 or (gasp) 3:00 intervals.
My joints aren't bothering me, I just run out of steam and my legs don't want to move any more.
I just checked the website again, and it looks like I'm moving up to week 3 this week! Woohoo!

I did my first 5k run today. I should say run/walk. It was a tough trail/course with a lot of hills. The wind was blowing pretty good, too, and it was unusually warm. For someone who has never run before, I think I did pretty well just finishing. I didn't pay attention to my time, just that I was ahead of some others younger than me.
After a few days rest, I better get back to my training; I haven't finished week 6 yet...

I'm on week 5 and I'm considering doing a 5K on June 12. I figure I'll run as far as I can and stop to walk when I need to. It would probably take me anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour if I walked it so I hope to finish in 40-45 minutes if I run for part of it. Of course if there are a lot of hills, I may end up walikiing most of it.
Becky, I can't remember - have you been training outdoors or on a treadmill? I find that I get a better workout outdoors. I think it would be better preparation for a 5K.
BTW, how was day 3 of week 5 for you? Were you able to do the 20 minutes with no walking? Tomorrow is day 3 for me and I'm a bit nervous. I don't think I'll be able to do it. I think I'lll probably have to repeat week 5.

Core, all my training has been on a treadmill. The first time I did any running outdoors was my 2 mile run in March. Big change from the comfort of the gym, but it was a course that I have walked many times. I do set the treadmill for 1% incline, to add a little "realism."
I haven't been following the couch-5k plan very closely for a while, but week 5 was challenging for me; I repeated it to improve my form/speed. I'm sure I'll have to repeat week 6. A big mistake I have made in the past is trying to do too much, too soon, and then paying for it by being sore and having to take time off.
Where I live, it's not convenient to just go out the door and run, but my health club is a block away. I'm beginning to look for ways to train outdoors, now that I have a little confidence and don't feel like I look like an old cow running down the street.
Good luck in your training. I have looked at Runner's World magazine website and they have some good training plans for beginners, too. I like the walk/run training.

As expected I didn't do the whole 20 minutes on Friday, but I ran longer than I thought I could - 15 minutes.
I'll be repeating week 5 until I can do the 20 minutes. I hope that will be this week.

Wow! I completed the program and yesterday I ran for 45 minutes! It was only 3 miles because I was going s-l-o-w!
This was on a treadmill with a 1% incline at 4 MPH. I've been doing the treadmill for the last few weeks after recovering from shin splints. I think I've convinced myself that my body is now strong enough to hit the road again. I'll finish out this week on the 'mill and then next week, I run outside! I hope the humidity has gone down by then.

Awesome! Let us know how running outside was. I ran on the treadmill this week, too. I really hate it, though. Can't wait for it to cool down a little bit.

My first week of returning outside to run went OK. Monday was the best day. Wednesday was very humid and it wiped me out. It took a long cooldown walk (ove 10 minutes - it usually only takes 5) before my heartrate got back down to something resembling reasonable. This morning was better then Wednesday, but I don't think my body was fully recovered from Wednesday's run. I still felt tired, but it was the first time I was able to keep my heart rate below 160 for the entire run.
I'm going to rest this weekend and hopefully I'll be ready to run again on Monday.
I signed up for my first 5k on Aug 11. My goal is to finish without having to walk and without being last to cross the finish line. Wish me luck!
