Is it any consolation when I tell you that DS#3 (age 6) vomited at school today, on the Rabbi who is his teacher? I confess it was one of the few times I was happy to be a working mother. I was saved the embarrassment of picking him up at school. We live 6 blocks from school, so my babysitter was able to go get him much faster than I'd have been able to had I left work and gone to get him. Even more glad when I found out after my babysitter got him that he threw up two more times in the office.

Hmmmm . . . Ema, I checked out the Couch to 5K and the podcasts. (Step 1). I downloaded the podcasts and checked out the "not too offensive music" (Step 2). Now, I have to put the podcasts onto my iPod (Step 3). And, the doozer of them all -- try out week 1 . . . !!! (Steps 4, 5, 6, . . . ) Like you, I am not a runner, but I have ALWAYS wanted to be a runner! I think it's because runners have such cute butts!! Every time I try it, I end up with awful shin splints. I think its exactly as the website says -- because I try to do too much too fast. I also have a bad back, so I never thought that running was for me -- but, if I am smart about it and don't try to push it, I bet I can get to 5K in a bit longer than 9 weeks . . . Maybe I can double up the weeks to be careful of my back? I am intrigued! I leave on Wednesday for meetings out-of-town, but perhaps I will have to try this when I get back this weekend. Beth -- are you up for a side challenge of our own? To get going on this?! Let's think about it!! I am COMPLETELY with Ema - if I can run 30 minutes non-stop, then I have accomplished something that I NEVER thought possible! I'll start with that and then deal with whether its 3 miles or 2.5 miles later! Thanks so much Ema!!! Barney

Alright Barney - I'm in! I agree - running 30 minutes non-stop would be a huge accomplishment. The longest I have been able to do is 10 minutes and I've only done that a handful of times. I have not downloaded the podcasts yet (actually, that's my husband's department) but I'll have him do it.
Ema/Barney - do you do this outside or on a treadmill? I assume treadmill since it's cold.
Thanks to everyone for your birthday wishes! I went spinning yesterday morning, had my favorite pea soup for lunch and sushi for dinner. Also had a few bites of key lime pie and cheesecake! But now it is Jan. 9 and the holidays are officially over for me! Early January has lots of birthday celebrating in our family, unfortunately. So back to spinning this morning again and Core for the rest of the week! Hopefully those skinny fairies will make their way to Chicago by Friday.
Hope everyone has a great day!

Beth - I will plan to run at the gym, on the treadmill. (1) it's COLD here, right?! It's supposed to finally get Chicago-like this weekend too (2) It's better for my back not to run on a hard surface. I *may* have DF on board too . . . we'll see! I told him about it this morning when he woke up (you saw what time I was typing last night -- he was s.o.u.n.d asleep!) He got jacked up when we talked about it. But, I know how short lived that can be for him. I leave at 8:00 tomorrow morning (after I finish working here and packing - oy!) I get back on Saturday, so I'll shoot for Sunday as my start day. If I get DF on board, I'll drag him to the gym on Sunday with me! Everyone have a great end of your week! I'll do a WI when I get back this weekend and post some results. Last weekend was too short of a week to see anything real. Take care! Barney

Hi friends,
Happy Wednesday! This is my third day in a row of being up before 5 a.m. so I can be properly awake and fueled before going to the gym. Still feeling so motivated!
I started the C25K about two years ago, when I first started losing weight. I got to the point where you run 20 minutes without stopping, and then I got overwhelmed by the long stretches of running. But I did keep exercising, and I did continue to sometimes run for short intervals during my walks. That summer, when my sister visited, she introduced me to Jeff Galloway's method of running. Galloway's method is to run for a "short" interval (about 5 minutes) and then walk for an even shorter interval (one minute). I tell you, it was life-changing to discover this way of running. My sister was training for a marathon at the time and I went running with her. One day we ran 8 miles, my all-time high to this day.
I recommend to all of you aspiring runners to check out one of Galloway's beginning running guides, because he truly does make it easy, you feel great, and you do not get bored. This is the method I plan to use to run the marathon next October or December, and any other smaller race I run between now and then.
Thanks for all the vomit stories! We've had our share over the years, as well. DD is just fine but very embarrassed.

Hi Vals,
It sounds like people are really using the new year to get down to business... making progress, being accountable, accepting the good with the harder stuff. You guys rule!
Just wanted to say that i too have done the c25k and i participated in an half marathon last year as a result. It totally got me excited about the success i felt about increasing my stamina, a little at a time. I actually ran the first 7... yes that is a SEVEN... miles of the 13 and then walked and ran the rest. And i am SO not a runner or a racer. I have asthma and i get really anxious in competitive situations but the slow and steady pace of the c25k really gave me confidence. In fact it took me longer to finish the 1/2 (3 hours and 15 minutes) than it took many others to complete the full marathon and i STILL felt great!
Now i haven't really run again since last summer but you all are inspiring me to get my rules back out or... as you have done, get the stuff loaded into my ipod.
Maybe once my little calf injury -I popped my gastroc in a rehearsal last night so i'll be down for the count for at least 2-3 weeks - heals i can join your mini challenge!

Wow, all this talk of marathons & running - I'm so impressed! I've worked up to 25 minutes running on the treadmill (with a 30 second break at 15 minutes left & another at 7 minutes left), but I find it so hard to run for a long time non-stop. You all are so ambitious - WTG!

I did Day 1 of Week 1 of the Couch to 5K this morning and it was a great workout!
Sulee - Hope you're feeling better! I am inspired by your half marathon - that is something I don't think I could ever do but maybe, just maybe....
Ema - thanks for the podcast info - it was great and I downloaded the first 2 weeks already. I love when the guy says "you should be feeling great from your run, not winded or out of breath" and I was defintitely winded!
Coco - I'll definitely look into that Galloway stuff.
I bet if we all start running again those pounds will melt off!
I'm off to shower and then go to my son's class to celebrate his birthday. I'm making Rosemary Chicken Breasts in the slow cooker tonight - my new recipe of the week! Anyone else have any exciting dinner plans tonight?
Have a great Core day everyone!!!!!!!!
-Beth

Ok Beth the Chicken recipe sounds great. Is it here on the boards or did you find it somewhere else. Please share... I'm very impressed with all of you who are committing to a running program. Running is the last form of exercise I would enjoy doing. lol Hmmm pretty much any form of exercise is the last thing I would enjoy..lol. I've always said my saving grace for this journey is that I walk all day long with my job. Doesn't do much for muscle tone, but I do stay moving. My first week with this goal has not been great. I've made poor choices more often than good choices. The up side is that next week I can only do better. I'll check back in after wi tonight for a more accurate update. Have a wonderful day Katie

Hi everyone! Everyone is steamrolling along--awesome! I had a fairly good week, although I still have some work to do on some of my goals. I had some good NSVs this week--the resolve and willpower are re-emerging, it seems. I knew I wasn't going to get home until after 9 last night, so I had pre-planned by putting together a nice core stew in the crockpot the night before and put it on before leaving in the morning. When I finally got home (dog tired) I could just savor a warm, comforting meal without fuss. I really believe that planning is the key to success, especially on core. I was down 2 lbs. last night at WI, which was encouraging. As they say, "one day at a time". Rock on, everyone!

Morning peeps! Wow, vomiting and running. I've got some great dog vomiting stories, but none of them involve churches or clergy, so I feel I've already been trumped . As for running, I applaud you all, especially those of you with 40+ year old knees. Back when I was trying to find "my" exercise, I did Days 1 and 2 of the C25K program. I found myself doubled over, not with exertion, but with hysterical laughter, on Day 2, when I decided that I hated running so much that it was funny. (A few weeks later, I got on a bike for the first time in 30 years, and felt like a kid again. I just *knew* it was my sport.) On to my weekly challenge results: Follow the new snack guidelines - yes, except for twice when I had to dip my carrots in a point's worth of hummus. I have a serious hummus addiction, but at least I'm weaning myself off TLC crackers and onto carrots.Stay within my WPA WITHOUT the use of creative accounting practices. Went 6 WPA over, but was scrupulously honest, especially about the unplanned lunch with the 20 point (!!!) muffuletta. (It was SO worth it.)Eat only to satisfaction, and practice safe leftover management - into the freezer! Yes - and I actually pulled one of my three servings of tamale pie out of the freezer, and ate it! And it was good!!! You may laugh, but this is a big deal for me.Use the following phrase as often as needed: "Do I want to eat this, or do I want to get to goal?" Still working on making this a mantra. There was another good one posted on the CPTE board yesterday - say aloud, "I am not hungry, but I'm going to eat this anyway," as a technique for stopping eating past satisfaction. I'm going to use this phrase as well.Oh...and I dropped another .4 at WI today. Again, it's in the right direction, so I'll happily take it. Have a great week, everyone. I feel strong!

Mikki & Vita - YOU GO GIRLS!!!!!!!!!!
My chicken was great, my DH said it was his favorite thing I've made in the crockpot so far. It was very easy and I have leftovers today for lunch. I'll post it on the recipe board. Another tip: Bird's Eye just came out with "steam in the bag" vegetables and we tried the brocolli/cauliflower mix last night and they were really good and fresh tasting. I'm going to stock up for the winter then I won't have too much of an excuse to not get enough veggies in!
Today I have a meeting at DS's school and then yoga this afternoon. I'll check in after WI tomorrow morning. Thanks to everyone for keeping me motivated! This running thing has gotten me excited and hopefully it will shake things up.
Have a great day!!!
-Beth

Good morning, all! Great loss, Mikki!! Katie - I am with you, running is the last exercise I would want to do LOL. But I am impressed with all who are doing the Couch to 5K and other programs. As a matter of fact I am going to check out Jeff Galloway. Sulee - I hope your calf injury is healed very soon! I made much better food choices this week and started to exercise again...tonight will tell as I will WI when I go to my meeting center to work...so I will check in tomorrow. Have a great day and HIHO! Skinny vibes to all!

Hello all,
Sorry I haven't been very active on the board but life has been busy. Working a lot (no excuse there since I can log on at work) and helping plan the memorial for my friend. I just feel overwhelmed and so sad these days. But hopefully the memorial will give me some room for the sadness and then I can start fresh with the challenge on Monday.
I have been consistent with my exercise and I get bonus points for that, which balance out the negative points for the chocolate that I have been eating. Things even out.
It is wonderful that everyone is talking above running. I personally stopped after my fire academy when my knees started hurting. BUT I sure do support all of your efforts. Way to go ladies.
Hugs, Cynthia

It has been so long since I've felt like I could inspire anyone with weight management and fitness. I can't tell you what a boost you've given me by letting me know that I've been helpful to a few of you in deciding to try a new activity.
Despite a great week (I'll detail my goals later when DS#4 is finally asleep)--stuck to flex and the HG's like glue and exercised over 28 AP's for the week despite it being a very hectic week--and lost a whopping 0.2 lbs. Trying not to be disappointed by it, but I was really expecting more. I feel so much better from eating well and exercising, and I'm really, REALLY trying hard to let that be reward enough for my efforts. But I confess that in my heart of hearts I really wanted to see 1 lb down at the scale tonight, and I didn't.
