Kathy, wow, what an experience. I'm glad that you're ok, although sore. How quickly things can happen. Be gentle with yourself and give your body plenty of time to heal. Take care Happy Thanksgiving.
Ema, I do remember those scales. lol I also remember how hard it was for me to stand still enough on them to be weighed accurately.
Our son won't be home for Thanksgiving, but will for Christmas and that's ok with me.
Have a great day everyone Katie

Happy Thanksgving Everyone. Sorry I have been absent for a few weeks but life got super hectic with caring for my son and a sick friend. I am still focusing on my origianl goal of gettting to 166 by the end of the challenge. It is very ambitious but I need that kind of challenge to make this work.

HI HI! Sorry I've been absent--crazy amounts of school stuff lately. Now I've got a lot of catching up to do so let's get to it!
Beth: Way to go! 3.2 gone! Woo hoo! Donating blood--what a great way to remind yourself to be thankful!
Katie: 2 lbs! That's fantastic! Thanks for your kind words too.
Sulee: Great to get that gym membership in trade. How's that working out? So sorry to hear about your blahs--sounds like they're going around a bit.
Hello and welcome, Barney!
Amanda, how did your first meeting go? Did you like it? The on-line thing just isn't for everyone. I know I need accountability.
Cathy, sounds like your weekend was still a good one--don't sell yourself short, girlfriend. How many days are perfect for any of us in terms of food, exercise and GHG?
Susie--Way to go on that WI! 1.8 gone!
Vita! What a scary experience! I'm so glad that you're ok and that you got to stop and be thankful for a while. HIHO with Core. I'm in the same boat. Let's turn it around!
Hugs to you Xena--hope everyone is better and you get some "you" time.
Wishing everyone who observes it a good Thanksgiving and a healthy, core weekend!

Kathy, glad you are OK. Sounds like a scary bike accident.
Well, ladies, I'm quite excited and proud of myself. I took the plunge and joined a gym tonight. The price was quite reasonable. Imagine that, something reasonably priced in NY (besides walk-in manicures)! The gym membership will be almost totally reimbursed by my health insurance if I go at least 50 visits in each 6 month period. That averages out to 2x/week, which is imminently doable. The insurance reimbursement is great incentive to go, as if the health and weight control benefits weren't enough. If I get the reimbursement for both 6 month periods, I'll have a net cost of $68 for the year for the gym! Can't beat that. And they have babysitting during the AM hours, so Friday, when my babysitter is taking black Friday off, I can still go exercise while my big boys are in school! I may not make it to WW, but I'll get to exercise.
Today was a major, and I mean MAJOR, activity day. I went to the suburbs north of Manhattan to a bank where I'd opened an account on the internet to get the iPod nano which was a premium for opening an account. I walked 0.5 miles to the bus to get to the subway to get to Grand Central Station in Manhattan to get the commuter train to the northern suburbs. Bus to take me to the bank from the train station wasn't going to be due for 15 minutes, so I consulted my map and walked the 0.75 miles to the bank. Much to my dismay, and despite having called the day before to confirm that they had my iPod at the branch. They informed me that it was at the other branch in town, but if I sat and waited they'd have it sent over. I asked them to show me on my map where the other branch was. It was two blocks from the train station. So I walked there (1 mile) got my iPod and got back on the commuter train back to Grand Central, which was quickly becoming a zoo with holiday travelers.
From there I walked to my therapist, 3.5 miles. Much of it was along the route of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which was being set up with seating stands and barricades as I passed by. It was quite cool to see.
Had a great session with my therapist, then did about 1.5 miles of walking as I did a few errands. Finished by walking to Central Park West by the Museum of Natural History (if any of you know New York) where there were two streets blocked off as they were beginning (at about 4 PM) to inflate the balloon floats for the parade tomorrow. I'd happened upon it by accident last year, and realized before I got there that'd I had the good fortune to see it again this year. It's quite a site, and lots of people come to see it. More of a New Yorker's thing to come to the inflating and a tourists thing to go to the parade, I think. Unfortunately the cold misty rain was turning into hail (small and not dangerous, but quite unpleasant to be walking in), so I couldn't really enjoy the sights as much as I'd have liked.
Got back to Brooklyn and went to the gym, took the tour, talked $ and signed the papers. Then walked another 2.5 miles home.
That's a total of 9.5 miles for the day, if I totaled it all up correctly.
I think I need a hot shower and an early bedtime!
Wishing you all a happy Thanksgiving!

I have been missing in action and missing from the challenge. Back on track again for a few days and wanted to check in. Hubby may or may not come back home tonight depending on what the driver hears about roads between here and Syria... Anyway...not as good as I could have been but have not given up. Need to read how all of you have been doing but will do that later. Thanks for being here

Used my gym membership today and enjoyed myself thoroughly. I know I'm in the honeymoon phase, but I'll take it for what it's worth. It's been years since I exercised regularly in a real gym, but last time I did it (about 13 years ago) I really got hooked. It was the first time I learned how reinforceing and mentally good for a person exercising regularly can be. Not to mention the physical benefits.
I had started doing the Couch-to-5K program to start running, as I felt like I needed something more calorie-dense as exercise for the limited time I had to invest compared to my prior walking routine. I hope I'll be burning enough calories running for 30 minutes (when I work up to that point) that I will still have 30 minutes to do some strength training. I know how important the strength training is for weight maintenance.
I found a great podcast of a guy who did C25K, and downloaded it. He cues you through the running and walking intervals. There's music with a good beat to run to in the background, and he says a few encouraging words and tips, but doesn't talk excessively. It was great since I was using a treadmill and couldn't use my GPS running trainer to guide me through the intervals, since I was inside.
DS#4 went to the playroom, and had a great time. He's already asking if we can go back tomorrow. YES! I'm going to use a bike or the elliptical.
Hope you've all had a nice Thanksgiving. As I mentioned, we don't really "do" TG. I had some Lo Mein noodles (found Kosher fresh lo mein noodles, which was a treat) and also a sweet potato, my bow to traditional TG foods. I made a nice marinaded chicken and some acorn squash for dinner tomorrow, freeing up time to exercise. Do I sound like I have a 1-track mind?
Cathy--sorry you're having extra stressors, but glad to see a post from you. Hope DH makes it back safely.

Happy, no, make that DELIGHTED to report a loss of 3.2 lbs this week. That puts me back where I was a few weeks ago, but encourages me that the exercise is, indeed, going to help me turn things around to where I want them to be.
Went back and used the gym today. DS#4 couldn't wait to go to the playroom. I did a full hour on the elliptical. Figured out how to use my HR monitor with the companion website and track my progress. That sort of stuff is enormously helpful to me. Give me a gadget or a graph, and I'm engaged. Give me a gadget that makes a graph and I'm totally engaged with whatever activity lets me use the gadget again to make the next point on the graph.
DS's now home from school, and I have a tiny bit of cooking to do to finish preparing for Sabbath meals, as well as getting everyone bathed and dressed for synagogue tonight.
Weather is much improved over our miserable day yesterday, and I'm hoping that will provide an opportunity for a sunny fall walk tomorrow afternoon. I have to work Sunday, so don't know if I'll go back to the gym tomorrow night after the kids go to sleep or Sunday AM before work.

Kathy - what an experience! So glad you are okay.
Ema - way to go on the loss and on the gym! I found that once I found something I really liked there I was hooked also.
Cathy - good to hear from you.
Thanksgiving in NJ was tough with my stepmother and it was difficult to see the drastic change in her appearance since our visit in August (now solely in a wheelchair and extremely swollen in the face from the steroids she is on). However, we are definitely having some good quality time with her which I am thankful for - especially for my soon-to-be 5 year old. I was pretty munchy yesterday on nothing that was really worth it and because I am away I didn't weigh in today. I'm looking forward to getting back into my routine on Monday. We return home late tomorrow night and will hopefully see a movie on Sunday while DS hangs out with my in-laws.
Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I am thankful for all of you that I have "met" here!
-Beth

Hello all,
I am glad to see everyone is posting. Sorry about your stepmom Beth. That must be hard to watch her be ill. I am watching a similar progression with a co-worker/friend who has stage 4 breast cancer. It brake my heart every time I see her.
I have had a couple of really good days. I am not tracking food but am sticking with the:
No Snacking No Seconds No Sugar Yes Sweating plan. S-S3
It seems to be working but only the WI will tell on monday.
Congrats on your great Loss Ema. I never really love going to the gym but once I am there I am always glad I made the effort. You feel so much better after you work out.

Hi all! I am still in Florida, so I have no Saturday WI to report -- I will have something for you tomorrow when I get back to Chicago. We've had a wonderful time. My siblings and all of my nieces and nephews came down and we spent the last few days just by the pool relaxing and playing. My brother recently moved from Chicago so I don't get to see him and his 3 kids every weekend like I used to. All of the kids have such a great time together. (My brother's 3 kids and my sister's 2 kids). It's bittersweet to see them have so much fun, but to know that they used to have that any time they wanted when we all lived so close together. We have to learn to just take it when we can get it. Kathy - I hope you're feeling better. My brother-in-law is a pro cyclist and he's taken some pretty nasty falls himself. Congrats to all of the losers over the holiday, that's so tough. To those who didn't lose, it's not the scale that matters, it's how you feel about yourself . . . so, keep up the healthy habits and continue to think your positive thoughts. . . Safe travels for everyone traveling tomorrow. Barney

Hi I am a newbie here, and reached goal last week after 10 months on Flex. I want to switch to Core. My goals and challenge for the remainder of the year: 1.... Maintain, maintain, maintain! 2....Drink all my water daily 3....Exercise more. 4....Learn all I can about Core so that I will feel comfortable switching. 5....Become aware of when I feel satisfied, so that I'll stop eating!!!
I do eat many Core foods now. My worry is that I will overeat on Core when I stop counting points....

Taigas--welcome. My recommendation is that you spend another week or two on flex and make a concerted effort to notice your body's sensations of hunger and satisfaction. Learn about them while you are still using the points to control your portions, and prepare to rely on your body's sensations alone to control your portions. It is a skill that many people lack or have supressed while becoming heavy. But it is a skill you can learn if you put effort into it.
You also have to practice what you will do if you are satisfied before all the food is gone. It's not so easy for many of us. Throw away the food? Store it for another meal? Can you sit at the table and converse with others who aren't done without picking at food you're not still in need of?
This is a great and supportive group, with a lot of successful losers and maintainers who will give you lots of advice and support for the maintenance phase of your journey.

happy post thanksgiving!
I had my first "farm thanksgiving" courtesy of one of my friend's families. The family was warm and welcoming, there was NO alcohol -- not that i'm such a lush -- but the butter flowed like wine. Even eating tiny portions of the casseroles, i felt like i was in a big danger zone. THREE pies for dessert, and candy, and a cake, and and and. oy vey! i spared myself the pain of weekly weigh-in. Friday, I did exercise --- 47 minutes outside, 20 of them jogging, and i taught and mostly did a pilates class. Then Saturday i got really sick... the tummy bug, so other than feeling vile, i was mad that i couldn't exercise. so here it is sunday, i looked at the scale and freaked out. and then said, girl, everyday you can make better choices. ok so here i am once again determined not to continue to live fat.
on a strikingly similar (yet on the surface suprisingly so) note, HBO had a documentary film on yesterday entitled THIN about patients at an inpatient facility for women with eating disorders, Renfrew, I believe it's called. And the Sunday Times today has an article about a family "re-feeding" their anorexic 14 year old. Both were superb, VERY sad and really help me to see how food is SO much more for so many people, myself definitely included, than nutrition.
My gratitude for my friends here is immense. Thank you all.

Hello! I am back in Chicago -- oddly, the weather here is about as nice as it was down in Florida . . . how did that happen?! I'm not complaining, of course, but last year at Thanksgiving I think it was around 25 degrees or so!
I did a WI when I got home and I am happy to report that I lost 2 lbs last week. I only got to the gym 2x though, so I missed that goal by 2. (I'm shooting for 4+ times/week). But, alas, this is a new week!
Have a wonderful week everyone.
Welcome, Taigas! Best of luck to you!
Barney
