Is edamame a veggie or a protein sub??? I can't get a straight answer on the WW boards! THANKS pal!

I'm not sure you'll get a straight answer here either. They really fall into both categories: they are a vegetable, but are one of only a few complete proteins in the plant world (quinoa is another, I think; I'm sure someone will correct me). According to the US government, you can count them in either category depending on what else you have eaten (e.g., count as a veggie if you are short there, or as a protein if you are short there). I tend to consider them as a protein or a starchy veggie, and use non-starchy veggies and fruit to meet the requirements. Someone on the main board said something like if you have to ask if X is a veggie, you probably need to eat more veggies. Wish I could remember who...

I count all beans as a veggie, but I agree with Tina that a variety of fruits and veggies is important. I love edamame -- they are fun to peel and eat and I always get people asking me, "Ooooh, what is THAT?" when I bring them to work!

I consider them to be a legume -- a high protein plant food. Count them toward your veggie servings if you like, and know that they're also giving you a lot of protein.
Kind of like quinoa is a grain, but it's high in protein. I don't count it as a protein serving, but I rely on it to really hold me when I'm having a hungry day, or when I need the extra boost of a high protein meal.
