I have a Polar a5 heart rate monitor and the battery died. The manual recommends sending it in to the service center for replacement, but I'm wondering if it's okay to find a watchmaker to do it, or do it myself? Has anyone done this?
I'm somewhat technically adept, but I don't want to risk ruining one of my favorite toys. Thanks for your advice.

The problem is breaking the seal to get to the battery. I had one and when the battery died, we thought about it and decided it wasn't a good idea (there is no easy way to open the strap belt to get to the battery), we did change the battery in the watch part.
I ended up buying a new M32 with the new type strap that is made to be opened and the battery changed. I really like this strap much better.

Becky, I hope you see this before you try and change the battery yourself!!! I have a Polar A5 too and had to replace the battery a few months ago on the watch part. I took it to Walmart and asked the person at the jewelry counter to change it for me. (I get all my watch batteries there) She tried and tried and could not get the old battery out!! So, I bought the new battery and had my DH try......BAD MOVE!! He got so frustrated that he BROKE a piece of the watch inside!!! I almost cried..... I ended up sending it to Polar with a nice note telling them what had happened. They fixed it for me and only ended up charging me $12.95. I will never let someone else try and change the battery again!! The first battery lasted almost 2 years, so I don't have to worry about it for awhile. Monica

Thanks, Monica for the advice....
DH is very good with electronics and tools, so we gave it shot. He got it apart and replaced the battery, then after crawling around looking for dropped parts, he couldn't remember out how to get it together. He was ready to pitch it across the room when I said let me try. Somehow, I got it together and it works good as new.
I owe it all to good luck and a lot of patience and a magnifying glass.
