Good Morning. I just found this site and it is GREAT! I joined the Pres. Challenge this morning and I am excited to earn points. :0) I went to the gym this morning and earned 460 points (all cardio). I am using a heart rate monitor so I hope I am logging this correctly. I was at 80% for a good 40 min of my workout and 50% for 10min. I am assuming the 80% is vig. and 50% moderate?

Marie,
Yes, 50-60% of your HR max is moderate, and 60-80% is a good intense workout.
Way to go!

Good morning everyone. There are some great discussions going on here about exercise....and I encourage everyone to check out the sweetheart challenge thread for even more talk about fitting in exercise. Lots of interesting things being said.
No exercise today for me. I am going to take a day off and be with my sweetie. Tomorrow I will workout at the firehouse and then my big goal is to workout there again in the morning before I get off shift. That will be a real accomplishment for me!
Firegeek: Are you a fellow firefighter?

Welcome, Marie! We're glad you're here! Now there are over 25 Challengers signed up!
Keep up the good work, Challengers!
Thanks for the heads-up, Xena. That is a very interesting and helpful conversation going on over at the Sweethearts' Challenge.
So I have a question for everyone: does the Winter affect your workouts, and if so, how and what do you do about it? Looking for tips for coping with difficult conditions (including weather, holidays, and shorter days/darkness at prime exercise times - morning and evening).

Winter DEFINITELY affects my workouts!! All summer I got so much exercise, between kayaking for recreation, to walking outside, running and riding my bike to work and school, that once it gets cold it seriously disrupts my outdoor recreation. If I liked cool weather, and enjoyed snow sports it might not be such a problem - but ever since I was a child I have HATED cold and snow!
Usually, when winter hits I just turn into a slug. This year, I'm hoping things will be a bit different.
1. When my roommates moved out they left a recumbant exercise bike (not a very expensive one, maybe $200 they bought at WalMart that has magnetic resistance) that works to give me a cardio workout.
2. My fiancee and I also purchased a weight bench with chest press bar and leg attachment from a college student for $40! It came with all of the weights for the attachements, and when combined with our selection of free weights, gives us all of the benefits of most every gym machine.
3. Videos. I have a small collection - a couple of pilates workouts, a couple tae bo and a tai chi workout.
Although these things get me by, I'll be honest in telling you that I don't have nearly as much fun with them as I do when I can get outside. I have a gym at my disposal, which I can use for free at my college - but I'm not a big fan of the gym, as it's an additional hassle to pack the clothes and shower gear, and wait for equipment.
Additionally, my fiancee who is trying to get into shape, isn't a fan of any of our indoor options either. So we have decided to purchase a used treadmill from a student who wants to get rid of theirs (being in a college town has big benefits in terms of saving $$!). I think with that in our arsenal we will be very happy with the variety we have in our gym, as we both enjoy running, and I like interval training on inclines.
Long answer to a short question, but that's what we're doing!

I am pretty much a gym rat. I workout at work (in the gym) and then workout at my own gym the rest of the time. So weather doesn't affect me too much...I do like to ride my bike occassionally so the rain/cold does hamper that fun. I don't exercise at home at all. I just find that it never seems to work for me. I am too distracted by other things. I need to leave and go somewhere to focus myself enough to workout.

I dont think that the winter affects my workout too much. I use the gym almost exclusively, so the closures due to the holidays were my only obsticals. I do look forward to the spring though, so I get get outside with my daughter. I am going to thegym around noon today, and Im not leaving until I get in at least an hour and a half. I cant wait!! I will check back later,Ang

Zena, That is great! I had planned on becoming a paramedic, but I got really burned. There is a lot of crazy politics that go along with the business. I live in Washington state, and I worked in a small town. My dh works for Tacoma fire. I will have to check out that link. I have been out of the business for about 3 years though. Sometimes I miss it a lot. Talk to you later~Ang

I find just the opposite. I like to exercise in the cold weather. I have been running outside, and as soon as the weather gets too warm, I just can't run. Then I'm relegated to the treadmill and I just *hate* it. Now, when it does get really cold, like in the teens, or if it rains or snows, then I have a problem. That's when I hit the gym and take spinning classes or something.
That said, I do like to be outside in the summer. I just can't do anything too strenuous in the heat and humidity.

Hello everyone!! I'm getting back into the groove. I've done at least a 2 mi walk past couple of days. Today actually did WATP 3 mi for Abs with my 2 lbs weights for the first time in awhile. Boy, are my arms sore!!
Winter affecting my workout: YES!! Since I've lost all this weight I've had cold hands and feet ALOT! I do NOT want to get out of bed early to workout in the winter at all. I'm trying to get back into the routine, but my body is REALLY fighting it....
