I have never tried any water aerobics classes before but a friend teaches them at our city water park, so she gave me some passes. I was a little concerned about it not being much of a workout...WRONG! WOW! I left the kids and hubby at home early this morning and headed out. I did 90+ minutes of shallow water aerobics, with dumbbells. OMG!! What a workout! I am totally shocked at how much I really felt this, especially in my arms!!
The only problem is the classes they offer are at times that I really can't make on a regular basis because it is when I would be getting the kids ready and to school or when we would be doing afterschool stuff (activities, homework, dinner, etc). They do offer free swim or lap swim during the day and I spoke to the instructor today and she said that you are allowed to still use the dumbbells and noodles even during those times. So, my plan is to use the aerobic classes while the kids are on spring break and then try to use the free/lap swim during the school times. I think this will give me a good workout at least a few days a week. During the summer I can get a family pass ($120) that would allow all five of us to go use the pools.
Has anyone ever tried these classes? What did you think?

Sounds great! There is place near me that has water aeorobics but I'm not ready to wear a bathing suit just yet. Maybe by summer, though. I think one more size down will make me feel more confident.

Oh I hear you on the water stuff. Man oh man the first time I took a class I took a 2 hour nap after. When I first went in it was mostly older than myself women so I was thinking , oh this will be a breeze. Those women put me to shame!

When I was in high school sports (many moons ago), we upset our coach at some practice...I can't even remember what we did now, but I remember the outcome. He made us do sprints in the pool. At first, we were rather skeptical about this being a punishment.
We more than realized it the next day! I have never ached so much in my life as I did the following day!

I hope no one minds my resurrecting an old, old thread, but I wanted to sing the praises of water aerobics.
For years, I have had lots of problems with pain and stiffness in my back and knees... all due to my weight, of course. I was at the point of being unable to walk in stores without the aid of a shopping cart -- think "walker" -- and couldn't manage a quarter mile on our home treadmill without stopping to sit and rest my joints.
When I started doing WW, I knew I had to add exercise to my life -- but needed to find something extremely low impact. A lucky accident introduced me to shallow water aerobics.
My classes are 60 minutes, three days a week. My instructor uses great music, and every session is different. She also teaches jazzercise and regular aerobics, so I think I'm probably getting a good workout. I know she doesn't take it easy on us -- we move for the whole hour! We frequently use disks, balls, dumbbells or noodles, and we always do cardio, toning, firming and stretching.
One of the things I love the most about my classes is that I can tailor the various exercises to my own comfort level. The instructor always gives us options with each -- ways to tone stuff down or to challenge ourselves more. I also love that I'm right in the middle of the class demographic... in both age and size.
Because of the remarkable workouts I've been getting for the past month, I've already lost two jeans sizes. I've lost an amazing number of inches all over my body -- and can actually see muscles in my arms and legs.
Most wonderful of all... I am now able to walk at least a mile without even stopping.

Water workouts are AWESOME! They provide great natural resistance, and unload the joints for a good almost no-impact aerobic workout. Plus it burns a TON of calories!

I LOVE water workouts, and use them at least once a week during the summer (our little town only has an outdoor pool) as cross training to supplement my running and lifting. They wear me out almost as much as a long, double digit mileage run!

I agree, Sarah. I've been doing a lot of water aerobics this summer. I bought a family pass to the pool for my mom, my cousin and myself and we've all been going. The guards teach the classes and they're fairly decent. After taking a vacation, I went back on Monday and by Tuesday I couldn't walk I hurt so bad. I'm better conditioned again, though, so I don't ache anymore. I don't remember those pains when I started. Oh well. It's a great workout and I'm going to miss having a teacher. I wish there was a water aerobics class at my school! I mentioned it to one of my friends and she said it was for old ladies! Granted, that's what most of my class consists of, it's a good workout!

:D Thanks-I am signing up for a water aerobics class this week but was concerned it wasn't a real work-out reading this thread now has me concerned that it may be more of a work-out than I am ready for. But the very worse that could happen is I will ache and be tired but in the long run I am sure my body will adjust and it will be worth it.

I love my water aerobics class. My teacher is great, she is very experienced and her class is a great work out. I have taken other classes that were less strenuous, I think it really depends on the teacher.

water aerobics are one of the few kinds of exercise I actually enjoy. I love that I can just juck my head in the water if I get hot. I wanted to specifically mention deep water aerobics. They have zero impact because you're not even touching the floor, and work your muscles so hard! They say that 1/2 hour of deep water walking = 2 hours of walking on land, so even if you're not ready for higher intensity stuff, consider putting on a floaty thing and walking in the deep pool (or deep end) for a while.

I agree, Night. The first deep water class I took made my arms and legs shake! I thought I was tough, with all the spinning and so on that I do. Wow, I really felt those muscles after the deep water class. I plan to continue to incorporate it in my fitness activities, even after my ankle heals. It's fun and "different" and quite challenging.

I go to an all women's gym (no fear of getting into a bathing suit there - very supportive).
I go to water aerobics 3x a week.
The workout can be as hard or easy as you make it. You have to really push through the water to get the resistance.
The thing I like best is that I don't feel as overheated as I do when working out "on land".

Hi- On Jan. 2nd 2006, I wrote in saying I was thinking of going to water aerobics class. Now a year later I am certified instructor in water aerobics, and have lost 80 lbs. Water aerobics can burn up 500 calories an hour (matters how hard you work it) It is a wonderfult exercise if you have any kind joint pain, range of movement problem, flexiblity problem, balance problem, or cardiac. The nicest thing is everyone is the same in the water....all any one sees is little heads bobbing up and down. Is it a workout? I have had the young lifeguards of the pool take a class and they complained about how tired they were after the workout. If anyone has any questions on water aerobics please feel free to leave a message and I will be happy to reply.
