I'm sort of self-employed, but I don't really own a business. I am a freelance court reporter. I am an independent contractor that works pretty much with two agencies exclusively. I can work when I want, take off when I want and don't have to answer to anyone, really, except to meet my deadlines. So I guess that would put me in this category?

I'm a lawyer & solo practitioner. I work mostly out of a home office with no support staff. I've been doing it for a little over two years, and have been out of law school for about 4 1/2 years. It's great for keeping expenses down, but a little isolating, and the kitchen and other distractions of being at home can be tough. Still, I love being my own boss, having the control to practice the kind of law I want, take the cases I want, etc.

Yes, Rebecca, it *is* very isolating working at home. I am very thankful for these message boards. They keep me sane. I get out of the house to take depositions three to four days a week, but I'm with different people in different places every day, so I have no real relationship with any of them. And I deal with the distractions at home also. It's really not easy to work at home, but it definitely has its perks. I don't think I could do the 9-5 thing with a boss and time clocks and rules ever again.

I do work about half time for weight watchers, but the other half I work at home in a studio we built in our garage. I am a potter (make bowls, mugs etc.) I've been at it for over 30 years. My work is beautiful and I sell it to galleries and at a studio sale every December. Shirley

Hi, I am Carly, I go by divaofdiet on the WW boards. I've been self employed for about 24 years! I owned a beauty salon in my home (legal) for 20 years and I free lance at a retirement home one day a week. The hardest part for me too is the isolation. Even at the retirement home I am not considered an employee so i don't get the "perks". WW boards are so nice because I can stay OP and meet up with friends. Nice to meet you all
