Hey, how about a section for anyone who works in a school? Teachers, subs, aides, and anyone else who is employed in a school. I am a teacher who is going back to work on a long-term subbing position (3rd grade) after YEARS of being at home raising my kids. Who else is out there that works in a school?? Monica

Monica - I work at a college. Does that count? Sometimes it seems like I'm dealing with third graders (students and faculty). Have fun in your new position.

Monica - how are things going with your class? Do you like being in 3rd grade again? I imagine it's challenging.

Hey Tina!
Well, I worked three days last week and then the teacher's surgery date got moved up to Dec. 1st. So, she's back this week and next week until Wednesday. It's a good thing too, because I'm sick this week!!
The three days were good though!! I got to know the kids and their routines really well. I have a little more time to do my Christmas shopping now before I'm working full-time. Now I'm subbing from Dec. 1 until Jan. 13. (with Christmas Break off)
How is it going for you? Do you have 2 weeks off at Christmastime? Monica

Monica,
Sorry you are sick. I'm fighting a stomach/cold thing this week, too. I stayed home yesterday, but check email regularly - not much going on the day before Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving week is a good time not to be in school. At least you were able to meet the students and they will be familiar with you when you return next week.
For winter break, I only get a week. Faculty get more time (December 13-January 4??). Actually, our spring semester is starting early next year so we don't have the typical "down time" to prepare. I know several people who will be working the week between Christmas and New Year. Luckily, I'm not one of them.
Do you think you'll look for a permanent position for next year or continue with subbing? My aunt was a sub years ago and almost always had work. I think it would be very difficult, though.

Ok, so now I have to kick myself out of this section. I had some medical problems (very unexpected) and was in the hospital from the 23rd to the 27th. Now I'm not allowed to work for 6 weeks, so I had to quit my subbing job. I wasn't really looking to get back into teaching, but it's in my blood (I taught before I got married and had kids) and I was excited about the opportunity. Sigh.........Monica

Monica,
So sorry you've been sick. I saw your message on the WW board, but haven't been able to check in here (end of semester and all). I hope you are doing better and that things work out in the best way possible for you.
If you leave this thread it will just be me talking to myself - and that can't be good.

I'm a high school teacher -- I've just been without a computer for a little while, so I didn't know about this new section. Actually, I was out sick Monday and we had snow-less snow days Thursday and Friday (allowing me to spend Friday Christmas shopping), so I enjoyed a two-day school week last week And there are just five school days left before Christmas -- and they're saying it might snow some tonight ;D Of course, that just means more school days this summer. Oh well, I lost my weight from January through May last year, so maybe that period between winter break and summer vacation is the best time for me to lose -- at least that's what I'm hoping

Hi Keli!! I'm so glad I'm not left wandering around muttering to myself. People might start to point and whisper. Sounds like you had a pretty good week. A snow day without snow I thought that only happened in Philadelphia! We had a snow day (with snow) on Friday. This is finals week and then, thankfully, the semester is over. I'll be off the week between Christmas and New Year. What do you teach? How much time do you get for break? Hopefully Monica will continue to pop in. Judging from her messages she's a teacher at heart.

We missed a day early this year from flooding after Katrina, and so they decided to extend the semester to the first week after Christmas -- and I was really, really looking forward to being able to refer to a number of the students I have now as "former" students! Oh well. I teach Spanish and English. So, what do you teach? At least at a college, you probably don't have to worry about those 20-minute lunch periods!

Two weeks is a great vacation! Happy birthday ;D You teach English, huh? I'll have to watch my spelling and grammar. I'm in administration - learning technology support. I help faculty redesign courses and integrate technology when appropriate. I have a great colleague and our skills are really complementary - she's the techie how-to person and I'm the theory-driven why and when person.

Is everyone ready to get back to school? We start back tomorrow, and, no, I'm not ready And I start of by having to work the basketball game tomorrow night. For a number of reasons, this week is going to be difficult, but things should get back to normal next week, I hope I've been back OP for a week now (after a couple of months of eating the way I used to BC -- Before Core), which is something of a NSV for me, since I've been home alone much of the week.

We also start back tomorrow. I work in the office, so I have it a little easier than teachers but not much. I am trying to prepare and freeze a bunch of indvidual meals, so I will have ready made lunches and then am taking fresh fruit and veggies to have for snacks. I am also take lots and lots of water.
