“If anything is sacred, the human body is sacred.” - Walt Whitman
Let’s talk about your body, the only one you have. Your body continues to work for you every day. Your heart, lungs, brain and everything else that makes up your amazing body, just work, work, work. Your body is sacred and anything that is sacred deserves to run on “good” fuel.
What is Healthy Fuel? Fruits and vegetables, whole grains (the brown instead of the white), lean meats, low fat or fat free dairy, the less processed the better and water, water, water…
1. Let’s start at the beginning – breakfast.
Studies continue to show that eating breakfast can be incredibly beneficial. Research shows people who have a morning meal tend to take in more vitamins and minerals and less fat and cholesterol. The result is often a leaner body, lower cholesterol count and less chance of overeating. Melinda Johnson, RD, spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association says “That one act of eating breakfast seems to make a difference in people’s overall weight.”
If you are not a breakfast eater, re-think what makes up breakfast and what time it is eaten. A glass of milk and a banana at 10:00am may be your breakfast.
2. If I had to pick the most important component of “Healthy Fuel” I would have to say fruits and vegetables. Do nothing different other than add more fruits and vegetables to your meals and you will be healthier.
Just about everyone recommends at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
These plant foods can do many things to boost health. They:
Reduce the risk of some cancers
Beat the signs of aging
Improve memory
Promote heart health
Enhance the immune system
“Fruit eaters feel good about what they eat, are less interested in junk food and ultimately feel better about themselves.”
3. Variety, variety, Variety! An optimum meal consists of Carbohydrates, Protein and a small amount of Fat. No single food gives you all the nutrients you need, eating a variety of foods is essential to good health AND satisfaction. Look at different colors on your plate, different textures, different food groups.
4. Regular meals and snacks help prevent the “famine then feast” syndrome. Allow yourself to eat when you are appropriately hungry and stop when you are satisfied. The stopping part can be the trickiest. Eat slowly and stay in tune with your body. Everything in Moderation! “Hara Hachi Bu” is a saying in Okinawa that means eight tenths full. This saying is credited, by many researchers, with allowing Okinawans to live longer and more healthfully than any population on earth.
This week: surround yourself with healthy fuel and know that you are treating yourself the way you deserve to be treated.
“Be good to yourself. If you don’t take care of your body,
where will you live?” - Kobi Yamada
Think about what you do want, not all the things you may want to give up. You want to feel good about your body, you want to be able to move freely and easily, you want to be proud of your choices – every day.
