I read that yesterday - and I also was struck by the fact that the "eat when hungry, stop when satisfied" aspect that we know is the most important lesson of Core, actually works when you aren't as careful about what you eat. I do think Core has helped us turn around our attraction from the junk food to healthy choices - which improves our nutritional intake as well. I still vote for Core as the easiest and best eating plan to come along.

I agree. I was pleased to see more attention is being paid to this aspect of nutrition.
I remember years ago, reading something by Dr. Dean Edell. He said the perfect weight loss plan was very simple (but not easy for most people). Eat anything you want, whenever you want, providing you eat only when hungry and stop when satisfied. Of course my reaction was: Yeah, Right.
This all fits in with something that has helped me. I observe the habits of naturally thin people. It's been a real eye-opener.

I think that is fascinating. It seems to me that we have just been taught how to not pay attention to our bodies. My grandmother never would have eaten more than she felt comfortable with and she never had a weight problem. The food was simple and none addictive (except her pudding). We are trying to teach our son to eat this way. We tell him to listen to his body and stop eating when full. He is pretty good at it and will often tell me when he has had enough. We never tell him to clear his plate. So maybe I am the sandwich generation which has forgotten this factor of eating
When was the last time I was really hungry?

this diet wouldn't work for emotional/compulsive eaters like me

They had the 2 authors of the intuitive eating book on the Today show this morning. They were surrounded by junk food. I think intuitive eating works if you eat from the CORE list & limit yourself to 35 points of "other" stuff per week. LOL
I'm with Pookie! The foods they had on this morning would kill me.

Yes it does work for emotional eaters. It is very similar to what Geneen Roth has been writing about for over 20 years. Pookie, if you haven't already done so, you should read "Feeding the Hungry Heart" and Geneen's other books about emotional and compulsive eating. She advocates trusting yourself enough to eat whatever you are truly hungry for, but eating only when you are truly, physically hungry. In other words, adhering to the Core philosophy of listening to our body's signals of hunger and satisfaction, but without the Core food list.

Was anyone told when they were a child to be a member of the "Clean your plate" club?! I think that little phrase has done me more harm than anything!
Interesting article - but I struggle with the "only eat when you're hungry & stop when you're not" with foods that are good for me! I would not trust myself to eat anything I wanted, I'm still not good at recognizing the hungry/not hungry cues.
