I looked through the restaurant section and found some specific restaurants but thought it might be nice to have generic type restaurants listed with ideas for what to order if out and in a non-chain place...so first of all...Also, I am getting ready to travel to the USA and have not eaten in a restaurant there for awhile so...am looking forward to what you all have to offer.
Mexican Restaurants: What would you order or stay away from?

Mexican can be a tough one, depends on the restuarant. The one I go to has fish on it and chicken with salsa. But for the most part Frajita's could be a good choice if you split them with someone and can get/or take ff sour cream.
Enjoy your stay! ;D

I went out for MExican the other night and asked them to use as little oil as possible on my chicken fajitas. The waiter told me that they can make it with no oil, so I did that and they were great! You could really tell the difference (I go there a lot and am familiar with how their fajitas normally taste), but it wasn't any worse for not having the oil. I ate all of my beans, which I'm sure weren't core, but were really good and helped to fill me up.

I also order a chicken fajita salad, with no sour cream, no cheese, no dressing (I use salsa), and no tostada shell. I ask that they make the fajitas with no oil. It is good! But, it's hard for me to keep my hands off of those chips....

I was at a Mexican place a few months ago and ordered a chicken tamale which turned out to be completely Core -- it was basically steamed cornmeal, chicken and some onions and bell peppers wrapped in a corn husk, with a red sauce on the side (which I ditched in favor of guacamole). It was really, really good!
Remember to always ask how they prepare them before ordering tamales at a Mexican restaurant, because it may not always be a diet-friendly choice. It might just be a lucky coincidence, but in my experience, they're often steamed, and if there's sauce, you can ask for it on the side. Of course, whenever a particular restaurant's tamales don't seem Core-friendly, I just stick with fajitas (no oil), or a salad with chicken, avocados, beans, corn, lettuce and any type of salsa as dressing.

I am pretty sure that all tamales are prepared with lard. It's a must. Even though they are steamed they still contain high fat ingredients. Be sure to check because I have been wrong about things before. Just thought I would warn you.

For me, Mexican restuarants are easier. I always order a grilled chicken salad with a side of whole beans, Which I add to the salad. Whole beans have no oil in them. And I ask for some sliced avacado. If the salsa is not to spicy, I will use it for a dressing. A very very lil sour cream (not core) goes a long way for dressing with the avacado and beans.
If grilled chicken is not on the menu still ask if they can grill you a piece, or grilled shrimp ( a la plancha, which means on the grill lil or no oil).
Another option is chicken soup, but make sure there is no rice. Usually they add they rice at the end so ask them to leave it out. Mexican chicken soup usually has only veggies and chicken with no pasta other then the added rice.

I love the chicken carnitas. Fajita chicken avocada, cilantro, lime, sea salt, tomatoes, on a soft flour tortilla. I love those flavors together. The only points I counted is the tortilla....and the margarita.....how many points in a margarita? I don't care. It's my first one since february. I just enjoyed it.

I count beans as core if I can order whole (not refried) beans and they seem to be served plain. You can always ask!

this is a great insight as I was just told we are going to a mexican place for dinner tonight and I was having trouble what to order but now they have menu online so I am going to get either the chix or shrimp or all veggie fajitas made w no oil if they can do that and omit the sour cream and tortillas thanks everyone!

Different restaurants call it different things, but many have a grilled chicken breast seasoned with lime, garlic, and cumin. It's a great option for you.
Shrimp or veggie fajitas prepared without oil are a terrific suggestion. Typically, you get MUCH more interesting veggies when you get the veggie fajitas - squash and mushrooms instead of the boring peppers & onions with regular fajitas.
