I posted this on the "Other" board today, so thought it would be good here too: My new "fast food" core find is L&L Hawaiian bbq - www.hawaiianbarbecue.com/ . They have an assortment of hawaiian grilled meats over a small (very small) amount of shredded cabbage, served with rice and very creamy macaroni salad, so doesn't sound too core, right? But, at least the one near me, has "healthy options" - for $.25 more, they'll replace the white rice with brown, and for free they'll substitute the macaroni salad with a green salad. You can also get white meat, skinless chicken breast if you ask for it. That makes a perfectly healthy, balanced, and core fast food meal. I usually count 1 point because the sauce is a sweet teriyaki, and I never know if there's still fat lurking there somewhere, but it's pretty safe and yummy!

saf, where do you live? I live in Hawaii but I don't think that the L&L's around here offer those things! I wish they did.... well maybe not, I'd probably eat there WAY too much if I could get brown rice LOL! If you want, I can give you the nutritional info on the sauce they use. I LOVE it and have it a home. I use it all the time. Thanks for sharing!!

I'm in California - near Disneyland (it's the most well-known landmark). L&L has just been popping in around here the last few years. Actually, now that I think about it, the one where i get the salad and brown rice just has a hand-written sign telling about those things, so it isn't part of their "regular" menu. They have a lot of the signs, though, for daily specials and things, so this "healthy options" one is just one of them. I'm not sure if all locations here offer that, or just that one that I go to. There's a new one that just came in near my work - I haven't been there yet, but might stop by to check them out. That would be a yummy lunch if they offer those choices, too! It's interesting, online it shows that they have different things available in their HI stores than the mainland ones - probably local tastes? Not too much spam masubi is sought out here. Oh, and don't expect too much sympathy from me - living in Hawaii. It must be tough. (I'm just jealous because scuba diving is my passion, and the water here is 60 degrees and green and murky, yet I'm still in it every weekend. i'd love to have 80 degree and 100' visibility in my backyard!).

That's funny! I moved here from Souther California-near Disneyland. As a matter of fact I worked at Downtown Disney for awhile. The company I work for now has an office in Anaheim (where I started) on Katella between the Pond and the stadium. There's a good Hawaiian food place near there called Ohana Hawaiian BBQ and another in Orange called Ono. Ono is more upscale though. My Mom is from Hawaii and I was born here, so even living in CA we sought out Hawaii food. The only L&L I've been to there though is the one in Huntingtin Beach. Just too far from where I lived/worked to visit often. Where in OC do you lie & work? As I said, I worked in Abaheim and lived in Coto de Caza (that's near Mission Viejo if you're from North OC )

I know where Coto de casa is - that's a nice area! We looked there when it was first being developed. I live in Placentia, work in Brea. My previous job, though, was right across the street from the stadium - the other side of Orangewood, near the fire training center? We were neighbors! Too bad I can't still say that...I'd love give island life a chance. The L & L I go to is in Anaheim Hills - that's where my parents live, but there's a new one here in Brea that just opened a few weeks ago, and another one not far in La Habra. They're popping up all over. Actually, there are a lot of Hawaiin b-b-q places coming in lately - we've noticed them more and more in the last year or so. If you worked at Downtown Disney, then you haven't been out of CA for too long, have you?

Wow! We were neighbors! I have only been here since May 2004. I have lived here twice before though. I spent the 7 years before may (with the exception of a semester at University of Hawaii in 2002) in Orange County. I used to be in the restaurant business though, so I have worked all over the place. I worked at House of Blues when I was at Downtown Disney, that was in 2001. The cut hours to the point I had to leave after 9/11. Disneyland is acctually the one thing that I miss about being there-well and my family. My parents are still there so I get back every so often. As a matter of fact, I was talking to the California office this morning and I may have to go there for some training fairly soon. Even though I was there for 8 days at the end of December and spent the second week of January in Cleveland. Ugh, I didn't know this job would require so much traveling. LOL! Ok, now I'm just rambling Let me know if you'd like the nutritional info on the Hawaiian BBQ sauce. It's really thin, like soy, but sweet too. If I remember off the top of my head (at work right now, bottle at home) it's really low cal. Sarah

Hey, you two are talking about my neck of the woods, too. I grew up in Anaheim and now live in La Habra. I've worked at various offices located throughout north Orange County. About 10 years ago, I also worked at an office located at State College and Orangewood.
Anyhow, when I saw the thread, I wondered if it was the Hawaiian place. I haven't been there but know where the one is in La Habra. I will definitely try it some weekend for lunch and know exactly what to order. Thanks!

I tried to get brown rice at the L & L by my house yesterday (mind you there are like 2,000 just on Oahu) and they looked at me like I was speaking a foregin language. Well, I guess I am to them, LOL. Oh well, I would probably eat threre way too much if I could get it anyway

KAthleen, Let us know if the La Habra one has the healthy choices. I know the one in Anaheim Hills does, but it's probably a bit too far east for it to be convenient for you - at the Festival center on Santa Ana Canyon Road, near Weir Canyon. The Brea one is on Imperial and Kramer - in the Wal-Mart shopping center. Sarah, I'm not sure - do I want to see the NI? i count this as a core teriyaki sauce now - does it have like a basillion calories in it, so I"m not going to want to see how bad it is? Well, now I probably should know, since the ostrich approach with my head in the ground hasn't realy helped my weight loss efforts so far. If it's convenient for you, that would be intereting to know, but don't go out of the way for it. Thanks!

saf, it's acctually better for you than terriyaki sauce, it doesn't have as much sugar. It's 15 cal per tablespoon w/ 0 fat and fiber. Terriyaki sauce is basically 1 part water, 1 part soy sauce and 1 part sugar with some cornstarch to thicken it (and a LOT of ginger and some garlic). The BBQ sauce is 1 part water, 1 part soy sauce and 1/3 part sugar w/out the cornstarch-ginger and garlic. I use the Hawaiian BBQ sauce all the time for meat and fish. It's just so yummy! I am glad that we can share an enjoyable part of our ure with you ;D I have to say, in junior high school in Ohio, people really lokked at my funny when I pulled out my lunch... Hawaiian BBQ chicken, stickey white rice with soy sauce and macaroni salad... and I wonder how I gained so much weight!

fun seeing other Orange County folks here. I'm live in Orange (near the villiage of Orange). It has a new L&L there, but I have yet to try it. I will check to see if they have the brown rice sub also.

Sarah - that's great! Thanks for posting - that makes me feel a lot better, because the sauce was really the only thing about L & L that I felt might have been not in line with my core plans. Glad that's nothing I need to worry about now! Leelee - wow, we really are close! The Village of Orange is what used to be the Orange Mall, right? I didn't know there was an L & L there, too - good to know!

yep, it's the Mall of Orange all fixed up. The L&L went in around christmas time. It's on the right side if you walk into the mall from the front entrance (near Todai's).

I grew up going to the Orange Mall (before Main Place of course) since South Coast Plaza was too ritzy for us-can't imagine it all fixed up LOL! I guess it's just as strange as Mission Viejo Mall-well now I guess it's The Shops at Mission Viejo! What's with all of the Malls in SoCal being renamed to not be called malls?!? Still love South Coast Plaza though, one of the only things I miss about living there... that and Disneyland
