I was wondering what your favorite books are for weight loss and healthy living. What makes them great?
Here are mine: Volumetrics - helped me realize why I need to eat fruits and veggies for weight loss Don't Eat This Book- helped me understand why I need to avoid fast food Passing for Thin-a moving story of one woman's weight loss journey
Here are some others I'm planning to read: WW Weight Loss that Lasts Fast Food Nation Tales from the Scale

My brother just gave me a book to read called "Quit digging your grave with a knife and fork". A 12-Stop Program to End Bad Habits and Begin a Healthy Lifestyle by Mike Huckabee. He has read it twice and says it is really good. I am going to start it this weekend. He read a few pages to me as we were going to WW and it sounds great.

I saw an interview with Governor Huckabee after he ran a marathon (the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC maybe?). His story is pretty impressive.
For anyone who doesn't know, he's the Governor of Arkansas and lost over 100 lbs when he developed Type II diabetes (or was on the verge of it). His weight loss was quite public, needless to say, given his job, and he's made obesity a major public health/public policy issues in his state, from what I've heard (I don't live there). He went from being a total couch potato to being able to run a marathon in the process. He got moral support from another governor in another state from the opposite political party, and they ran the marathon together, which made for a nice public interest story on the morning news show circuit.
I've heard from someone in my WW meeting about the book, and need to look for it at the library.

I thought Thin for Life by Mary Ann Fletcher was excellent. It is vingettes and lessons from the people in the national weight loss registry, which is a research study of people who have lost weight and kept it off. I actually signed up to be in the registry, and know a few other WW members who are in it.
I also like "Strong Women Stay Slim" and "Strong Women Stay Young" by Miriam Nelson, PhD. She's a nutrition and exercise physiology researcher at Tufts in Boston and has done lots of research about strength training and health (weight loss and osteoporosis prevention). Her simple home strength training regimen is in the book, and I did it for a while on a video. This is a book for the lay public about this body of scientific information. The Stay Slim book includes more on the value of strength training during weight loss and for weight maintenance, as well as some nutrition advice and recipes. She has a food plan, but I didn't read too much of that. I think it's not too far from WW, just presented differently.

I did end up reading the book (Quit digging your grave with a knife and fork) this weekend and it is great. Once I started I could not put it down. I would recommend it to anyone. It really hit home and it is totally different from any that I have read. I recommend it.

I read Don't Eat This Book yesterday -- loved it. Found it to be a good companion book to Fast Food Nation.
Then I started Quit Digging Your Grave With A Knife And Fork - made it about 1/2 through then fell asleep. Gov Huckabee is not only very funny, he is intelligent and has common sense. He has real stories about realistic weight loss. Great book so far!
I got Volumetrics at the library as well, but only made it through a few pages. I don't like reading "diet books" and found it do be more about the diet than informative.
Thanks for the book recommendations!
