I keep forgetting to breathe.
On Saturday night, we ate at the table. I need to remember to clear it off before I start cooking. Otherwise I'm too frazzled from cooking and just want to plop down in front of the TV. No flowers but I did light candles. We took a breath first and had three courses--Aruna's lamb curry, then a fancy salad, then dessert. The meal took over an hour. I often get the munchies on Saturday night an hour after eating, but on Saturday, I was satisfied for several hours.
Now I need to focus on the breathing when I'm on my own.

Lesley, that sounds wonderful!
It does make a difference, doesn't it? The essence of mindful eating is to just do one thing with full attention - EAT. The more we literally AND metaphorically clear the table, the better we get at it. The slower we eat. The better able we are to judge our satifaction levels.
Mindfull eating is the best friend to successful weight loss.

Susie, last night's meeting topic was "satisfied." I shared the breathing technique with everyone. leader was impressed. everyone on flex seems to be afraid of the "eating til satisfied," but I talked about it and really how easy it is. hopefully, I convinced more people to try core. thanks for all the wonderful insights you are sharing with us. ;D

Susie, i've been reading the Mindful Eating threads and absolutely loving them as they really strike the cord that this is not so much about food as about how I think about food and about being mindful....I read and did the step one with the raisin and it's amazing how much flavor is in ONE raisin.....as I was wandering through this board (which I love, btw) I found two more Mindful Eating threads, this one and the step three - they need a sticky note (or whatever!!!) to keep them right up there with the threads on page one so they don't get lost!!!!
i'll keep reading and promise to start posting more......

Lizmarie,
I'm glad you are finding these threads helpful. Thanks for taking the time to let me know.
I'm gonna have to learn how to move threads...it never dawned on me to do that. (I'm a low-tech kind of girl!)
Thanks for the suggestion. As soon as I develop the requisite skill, I will do that!

I tried to make it special tonight by eating slowly and savoring the meal. You talked a little about this (I haven't gotten to the raisin yet!) and I KNOW that I eat too fast. Last night was the kicker--I realized that we had all wolfed down dinner in about 15 minutes. Needless to say, I felt awful--in the head and the tummy.
We set the table and have dinner (meat, veggie, potato) every night. I didn't realize how unusual that was. Anyway, tonight I served meatballs, so I carefully cut each one into fourths and ate one piece at a time. I had fewer than the "serving size", but I was full at the end of the meal. I guess thinking about what you're eating while conversing and enjoying it, really does make a difference. Thanks for the lesson, Susie. I'm going to keep at it.

You've just described how we eat every day at my sister's house in France (except for the candles ;-)). Three courses, food served from the kitchen, no TV. Really emphasizes the healthier relationship the French have with food.
I'll give it a try. It's a special challenge when you eat alone, because the TV and the comfy armchair beckon.
