I've mastered the art of producing a balanced meal, eating, and cleaning up in less than an hour.
It took many years of practice when my DD had me taxiing her to scouts, dance, driver's ed, art classes, etc. but I can say that I can pull it off easily now.
I have also discovered that I eat when I'm alone like when my husband goes out of town on business. I mean well, I plan special meals that he doesn't particularly like, but then the other things in the pantry and the refrigerator seem to call to me.

You guys are just terrific!!!! Ask you one little question, and look how you are off and running!!
*grin* Tomorrow I will tell the single most powerful little trick. I'm going to wait until tomorrow to give others a chance to think and post their answers here.
Before you know it, we'll all be mindful eaters together.

I never just eat. I always include another activity. aren't women/moms good at multi-tasking? I eat while reading the paper or a book, watching tv or reading the boards. but, at least that slows down my eating. ;D

Well my habits are 1. eating while watching Tv. That is the only time I get to relax and watch tv. 2. waiting until I am starving then I eat everything. 3. thinking of things I have to do or did instead of thinking of my food in front of me. 4. When my husband and kids go to bed I run in the kitchen and eat ....... well anything that seems like it isn't nailed down. 5. And my biggest one eating while I am working. I eat my meals in between calls and updating the computer, I couldn't tell you what I ate or what it tastes like sometimes. I take a bite here and there over a matter of an hour before my plate is gone instead of eating until satisfied. If you can tell me a way to get past this that would help me with my overeating i think alot.
oh and boredom , self pitty, and loneliness I am guilty of too

Being tired often leads to mindless eating for me. I use the food as a substitute for rest. This is followed closely by being too hungry and eating very fast without pausing to appreciate the taste..

what an eye-opening question.
Breakfast-generally eaten while I'm sitting at the computer in the morning.
Lunch-Can't change this one-- I work in an autistic class, and eat lunch with the students every day. Majority of the time, I'm shoveling the food in my mouth while assisting them to do what they need to do. Fortunatly at least, the school sells salads.
Dinner-- in front of the t.v.
Whats killing me here, is I made my goal. The first day of school this year, I got TOM---- for 2 months.. I let my hormones get the best me I guess, I ate mindlessly chocolate and salt for , a while. Then I quit smoking Dec 9--say no more.... I have gained back 20-25 lbs of the 75 I lost..... Mindlessly eating. So glad I found you

Such thoughtful responses! Sue, congratulations to you on quitting smoking! I'm an ex-smoker, too, so I know what it means. You have accomplished an enormous task for your health, and you can take care of the cigarette pounds, too. If you can quit smoking, you can do anything.... Susie

I hardly ever just sit down and enjoy what I'm eating. I always have to be doing something else at the same time. Most of the time I like to read while I'm eating - whether it's a physical magazine or the computer. Someone else posted about how they have to hurry up and eat while their husband just takes his time. That's the scenario in my house every night. He will read while he eats, but he actually stops eating to read - and it takes him forever to finish a meal. And when he's done, he's done - no matter how much is left on his plate.

Becky hit it on the nail for me. All my life, I felt that if I didnt eat that piece of food right this minute it would dissappear and I would never get the opportunity again. If there is something delish left over and it gets put away, I obsess......until "I" eat it. I have to have it before anyone else gets it Its sick behavior ..... I would love to be a "normal" eater, whatever that is....

I think my eating habits come from way back being a little girl. My mother, the lovely southern bell she is, always MADE us clean our plates before we left the dinner table. Of course, everything was fried, fatty or cheesy. Desert at her house was an EVERY night occurance. She makes the best cake with homemade frosting (PURE SUGAR). I would eat until I was sick.
So my mindless eating is even though I'm not hungry - I try to eat all of the food I prepared. Out of respect? Out of thankfullness its there? I don't know. WW has really helped me watch my portion sizes. But boy - I sure want a piece of mom's cake now.

I too was part of the clean plate club! I eat lunch at my desk almost every day, but lately that has helped me to slow down. I try to do other thing swhile I am eating, so that I don't inhale it! Also, I KNOW what I'm eating is good...I made it! At a restaurant, it's hard not to just eat without thinking, especially when I'm with a friend and we're just gabbing away. Some evening we eat in front of the TV, but lately I have been trying to eat in the kitchen, away from the TV. I am really THINKING while I eat...not of my job, my house, etc, but of my food. still a work in process, but aren't we all?

For me, it's exactly what MyLikeIt said. Rush home from work and feed DS (or, on the days when I am home with DS, use last bit of energy to prepare dinner for DS and DH). Once DS is in bed, collapse in morose heap on couch and stuff dinner into self while watching the news. Feel unsatisfied from morose semi-unconscious meal and continue grazing for the rest of the evening.
It's as though I am looking for something and can't find it.

I mindlessly eat sugar the most. Then I don't notice that I ate it and just want more. It is what has lead me to multiple bowls of ice cream in one night. Multiple like 4 or five. I think I would get sick if I ate that much now. I eat sugar mindlessly when I am hungry and there is nothing else. When I am sad and frusterated is another key time for me. Usually I eat it while walking around the house doing other things.

- Not allowing myself enough time to enjoy the meal. Doing "working" lunches, grab and go breakfasts, or mindless dinners. Even an extra 5-10 minutes spent on a meal can make a big difference.
-Eating with starving. Never a good idea to let myself get that hungry if I can help it - that helped contributed to my weight gain in the first place, I would not eat all morning (skip breakfast) and then binge for the rest of the day.
-Distractions. Eating before the TV/Computer/reading/opening mail.

I eat mindlessly when I get over hungry and when I have leftovers. I too hate to see things go to waste and my dh really doesn't eat any of the things I eat. Therefore, I'm not really hungry but when I open the fridge, or look at the counter things are staring at me saying EAT ME! Also, when I get over hungry I gobble up whatever I can find that is core to get me until my main meal is nooked or cooked. I also tend to eat standing up and I'm trying to sit at the table and look at a magazine or newspaper while eating. I'm hoping that this will slow me down. Can't wait to get tomorrow's tip to hopefully nip some of this in the bud!!!!
