Hello congrats on your 1/2, that's awesome. After 5-6 years as a long distance cyclist, this year I transitioned to multisport and did my first sprint tri this summer. (Age grouper.) I'm adding some additional tri's and running races to my schedule for next year. I am considering adding a late season 1/2 marathon, but may also wait until the following year. Right now running is my weakest discipline, I would love to get to a point where I could complete a marathon.

Wow, you guys ROCK!!! The longest race that I've run is a 10K, but I've run for almost 2 hours without stopping on my own. Right now I'm working on running intervals to improve my speed and build new muscles.
I LOVE TO RUN!!!!!!! ;D Monica

I'm so excited to see this strand of interest! I have been running for almost a year. never in my life thought that I would be able to run for extended periods of time. I started extremely slowly but had a few aha moment type breakthroughs . I started with my sister in law who was already a runner but it turns out we ran exactly the same pace which at that time was a 12 minute mile. I ran a 5K, then a 10K and then a couple more 10K's because after I ran a 10K I felt there was no going back:) Then I ran my first 1/2 marathon. Although I finished it was quite difficult. I didn't really understand the necessary prep. Up to that day the farthest I had run was 8 miles. I thought, well if I could run 8 what was an additional 5? Answer: pure hell!! Now I am in training for my first marathon on Feb 5th. I am following the Galloway method in which I run 8 minute and walk 1 minute. Now this was counterintuitive. I thought if I run and then walk I will slow down. Not true. It actually has way improved my time and endurance. It allows you to use a different set of muscles and for a moment and let some recovery occur in the running muscles.
Anyway, I have 2 small children and work full time so my running takes place in the dawn hours. I am out running at 4:45 3 times a weel for about an hour and then my long run every Saturday. I am pumped up to say the least.
In terms of WW it has helped me focus on somethinhg other than the scale. I wasa non-athlete my whole life. I never even knew what endurance meant! I see the bigger WW picture. I am 25 pounds away from goal. I have currently lost 50 pounds (over 2 years--25 a year) and am hoping this marathon training will pay off in the shedding of the last 25.
Anyway, I love to run too!!

Wow! I'm a fellow marathoner, half and full. I've done one full, 2 half and several 10 mile, 10k, 8k and 5k races. I never thought I'd be a runner, then I ran for Team in Training, and now I'm workign on becoming a TNT coach!
I am needing my run right now, actually...lots of stress and it's my way of handling things. I'll be back another time to chat more.

BellaSam, do you run in the dark when you run so early?? I've been thinking about doing that, but we live way out in the country and I'm nervous...Monica

Monica this is bellasam. (I accidently joined under 2 differnent accounts. 1 at work annd 1 at home.)Well it is a bit dark. However, I purchased a pepper spray and hold that while I am running. I had to try it out to feel comfortable but I often see the same people. I also carry my cell phone pre dialed to 911 and my partner knows my running route and when I should be home. So far it hasn't been an issue. Do you have someone who would run with you a couple times at that time to see what it feels like? I don't wear a walkman when I run so early so I can be really alert to my surroundings. Also, I vary my running days so I don't have too much of a pattern. Wow, am I really having fun!!!

Don't forget a reflective vest, bands or tape on your top or pants....gotta let those out there see that you're there too!
Now that it's dark so early, we run at night (my friends and I) We all wear reflective gear, and I hope that it means that we will continue to be safe as we run!
Monique, I used the run/walk method in my marathon...I ran from aide station to aide station, and walked through the stations. It worked well. The miles of 22-24 were tough, but I made it through them. I am not sure that I would have been any faster if I had tried to run it all, and know that I would have hurt a lot more post race.
I really didn't want to run tonight, was in a bad mood after picking up my car from the shop, but my friends wouldn't let me off the hook, and I'm thankful. Running allows me to be sane, in shape, happy and healthy. It's time for me to relax, meditate, think or be social...it allows me to travel, even if it's just to the nearest 5k, to spend time with like minded people, and has helped me to make great friends and build a community in a new town. I love it!

Its interesting, I would feel much more comfortable running in the country - I'm in an urban area now. I would mainly make sure to wear bright/reflective clothing to ensure you are easily visible to traffic. You can get jerseys / jackets with flective stripes, and/ or buy reflective wrist/ ankle bands. www.title9sports.com has a great line, including yellow baseball hats with a reflector in the back, a yellow yersey with refelective piping, etc.

Hi GUYS
I am glad I started this thread-i wasn't sure if any one would respond
So lets have a question of the week? What is your biggest food challenge while training?
A: for me it is staying away from white carbs. I crave them after a long run. And my stomach cnanot handle complex grains after long training runs, or even the day before. I get (i know this is gross) runners trots.
Anyone find a way to deal with this

I don't really have too many food issues. The running gives me extra points so I use them accordingly. I have been trying to shave back on some ways I use my 35 points. I made a new rule that ony one thing in my lunch can cost any points except on a morning when I run and then I can throw in 2 points of baked lays which I find a scrumptious treat! Also, I went to using splenda in my daily morning oatmeal instead of brown sugar except for on my long run day. This helped me this week and I consider it a little game! I'm still trying to figure out my use of GU when I run. Usually at the hour mark I need a half of one and then we'll see from there. Anyone else currently training for any specific races? Monique

I'm a runner but I don't do marathons. i only run 3 days a week and usually only go for 3.5 miles. the longest i have run is 4 miles - mostly because of the time it takes. if I want to run further, I have to slow down and then it takes even longer to finish my workout. I've been thinking of adding a longer run on the weekend, but now that it's almost winter, I don't think that will be possible. I don't want to run on narrow country roads with snow on the ground.
I'm mostly working on improving my pace. I ran a 5K in August in 40:13 and now I'm doing 3.5 miles in 39 minutes during training on route. I have a 3.5 mile race at the end of the month (depending on the weather).

8-)We run about the same pace. Generally I run 11:30 mile splits. I am working on improving my time a bit for the marathon. I would like to finish in under 5 hours even if that means 4:59!

I'm not training for a specific race, but I am doing a 10K Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. Last year we ran on ice and snow!!! Do you any of you do a long run each week? I've fallen in love with a really long run once a week. I run 9 miles and it takes about an hour and 35 minutes. I run on a walking/running trail about 15 minutes from my house. It's totally worth the drive because the trail is off the road, newly paved, and goes through some awesome countryside. My favorite part is running around a huge pond. I don't know if they keep the snow off it during the winter, but I bet I'll find out soon....... Monica

Hi Again
Yes I just started training for my second Half marathon. I did my first almost two weeks ago--on Nov. 6th and loved it so much that I am doing my second on March 4th.
I followed a strict 12 week training program for the first one were we built up long runs on sundays--the longest run before the race was 12 miles, the race was 13.1
This time I am not doing it as strict because of scheduling problems...but I am excited again!!!
bye for now fellow runners!! ;D
