I get what I call a craving. Maybe its is due to boredom or something else. But, in any case, I frequently equate it to being hungry when I'm not. This feeling is in my brain and not my stomach. I need to figure out how to shut off this brain thing.

I was also a member of the *clean plate club* and the *if you loved me you'd have 2nds club*. I still eat faster than my DH, I even put my fork down and take sips of water in between bites. He takes forever to eat.
What I really need to work on is chewing my food. I still find that I gulp when I'm in a hurry, hungry or tired.
DH is one of those naturally thin people. Fortunately, our girls take after him, and I don't push them to eat or clean their plates. That last part is the hardest for me. I can hear my mother's voice in the back of my head. A hard habit to break. At least I'm trying to spare the next generation. ;D
I mindlessly eat later in the evening too. Where I used to grag a bag of chips and eat half of it before I even realized it, now I'll keep getting fruit. Apples help with the crunch factor.
Thank you SusieQ. I look forward to reading/learning more!

Laura,
Distraction is your best friend when it comes to dealing with cravings to eat when not hungry. A walk, an interesting evening class, needlework to keep your hands busy.....
Another good tool is your kitchen timer. Look for a new thread soon on the power of delay. Often, if we ride out the impulse it goes away in as little as 5-10 minutes.
More on this later!

This has been a very interesting topic. I have been thinking about this lately but never put it into the words that SuzieQ has done. I really like the name mindless eating. I started to teach myself to slow down. I usually get so hungry by dinner that I woof it down. But lately I have been saying, slow down. Now I can add thinking to the whole program. What do I need to think about while eating things. Instead of being mindless I should be mindfull. Thankful for one thing, because I have something to eat and it tastes great if I think about it. The other thing is, if I am thinking about what I am eating I must ask myself am I enjoying the flavor, if not why am I eating it? This is going to be very interesting to think about. Now I just need to remember to think ;D

Hi Susie, I loved the raisin in step one and I’m ready for step two!!!!
I know this is an older thread, but I’m listing my issues as it’s good for me to see them written down……
What behaviors get in the way of mindless eating? Wanting to clear off my plate before the food gets cold – watching TV while we eat – these are the two biggest things….
getting too hungry is huge for me too – sometimes, if I get home from work and I’m too hungry – I gain consciousness with my mouth full of chocolate chips…..I now only buy enough chocolate chips to make Sam’s cookies and that’s it – no more leftover chips for me!
Time to slow down and think while I eat….I’ve been working on thinking BEFORE I eat, now it’s time to think WHILE I eat!!!!
