This is a most interesting thread that points out the beauty of WW: it's your program...Personalize it--carefully.
I have been thinking about this since the thread started and now I think I can express how Core works for me.
Before I joined WW, I was probably eating closer to Core than while I was on the various Points Plans--just WAY too much, and with the exception of dessert-type items. I cooked and baked from scratch. I would never use a packaged pudding mix or cake mix.
The irony here is that WW encouraged me to start eating FF/SF processed foods to stay within my Points. Needless to say, my satisfaction level of these foods was always out of reach.
I was lucky to be able to shed the excess weight anyway. I can't say that I would have been as successful with Core four years ago, with nearly 100 pounds to lose. I do know this: real foods are more satisfying to me than their SF/FF replacements. I can bake cornbread or muffins made with whole grains, egg whites, fruit, and tiny bit of honey or sugar and be okay.
A serving of FF/SF pudding is not satisfying to me, but I know how I am: I can't get enough of what I don't really want, so I'll eat it until it's gone and look around for something else. If I start with a Oat Bran Banana muffin and a glass of skim milk, that's where I'll stop. That's the Spirit of the plan to me.

wow! This has been a very enlightening thread for me...especially as a newbie to this site and to Core. Let me introduce myself...My handle is Michellesu, and I just started WW and Core a few days ago...on Thursday.
I have been struggling through, trying to understand and figure out the ins and outs of it. I think this thread helped me see part of the "science" of how Core works is that it gets you away from some of those foods that got you overweight in the first place. For me it is baked goods...sweets, bread, chocolate, hands down. I know no end to satisfaction for those foods. It comforts me to know I have points for them...but so far I have used very few of my points at all.
I have noticed though, that I am tending to "overdo" the Core foods that substitute for my old nemeses. The sf/ff pudding, the kettle corn made from 94% ff popcorn with splenda and cinnamon. I found myself having 3 snacks last night from dinner to bed time...pudding, kettlecorn and an apple. I would have been better off to just have the apple...or even a bowl of oatmeal.
I haven't tried any of the "baked" core goods yet. Don't know if the baked oatmeal would be a problem for me or not...I am guessing it would be, as I would add splenda to make it as sweet as possbile, and would probably find myself turning to it over and over for a chewy 'fix'. (I really love chewy things like brownies, bread, and candy.) It is this very drive to keep my jaws chewing that has got me to this overweight position to begin with. True core foods are satisfying, but they dont' bring the same mouthfeel as the foods I tend to abuse. That is what I am seraching for in my "legal" core snacks...a certain mouthfeel and sugar fix.
So my question for myself is this...what am I trying to accomplish? Of course the obvious answer is weight loss...the not so obvious one is my addiction. Food addiction must be conquered or the weight will just return.

Hear Hear! I agree! Even though I thought the WW baked goods recipes were good, I CANNOT control myself. So I STAY AWAY (from the baked goods that is )

This has been a very interesting thread to read. I also got this way from eating sweets, but also by eating lots of bread w/butter, potatoes, gravy, lots of processed foods. Mac & Cheese etc. Now if I fix the sweets, it is with some modification in each recipe. I do use the ff/sf pudding, but I do count it. Since core started I have had the ff/sf pudding twice. I do like the s/f jello, but again not offen. The kettle corn w/ splenda and cinn. maybe once a week. Sweets I can stop with, mac & cheese, potatoes with gravy, biscuits & gravy (I am a southern gal), so I just don't eat them. If I have bread it is with a veggie burger, and I count the bun. The other day I found a recipe that someone posted, it was tomato soup with a can of white beans. It was great. The soup I used water with and also fixed a veggie burger (no bun). That was a great core lunch.
This has been very eye opening to me.

Hi - I want to present another side to the baked goods question. The baked oatmeal to me tastes like:
baked oatmeal
It is not nearly as cake-y or baked-like as a regular muffin or sweet. It tastes like a hearty health food. It has no flour. It has eggs, milk, oatmeal, applesauce, vanilla Splenda. I am going to try it with Stevia to make it even more au naturel. How is that different than people who add these things to their Cream of Wheat or oatmeal?
Not trying to upset anyone, but just presenting another viewpoint. I am able to just eat one of these, and pre WW I was a major muffin freak! But these are not floury, buttery or cakey. Very different

Interesting information on the Flex home page today. Specifically states that grinding oats into flour is not core. I realize baked oatmeal doesn't fall in this category, but I thought I'd share the link if you're interested. tinyurl.com/64r2s

I, too, got to WW goal and Lifetime on Core without baking or eating baked goods (Core or non-Core). It's just what worked for me. I know that baked goods are a weakness of mine and choose to avoid them. I still bake for my family ocassionally, but don't eat them myself.
I envy those who are able to eat one muffin or one cookie and move on.

Hi, everyone, Here's a post I made on a bakery goods thread on WPA today. I am pleased with how it turned out, as I think I've put my finger on my "concerns" about making Core-ingt bakery goods. So here's what I said, FWIW --
WW has said that Core + Core = Core, and so anyone who's making a bakery item out of purely Core ingts is technically eating Core. However, IMHO it's worth familiarizing yourself with the science behind Core before you include facsimiles of stuff that's not Core (i.e. a Core pancake, when a "regular" pancake isn't Core). The science behind Core is, indeed, all about energy density (and also WW's research findings on most-likely-to-be-abused foods). Bakery items (not casseroles and meatloaf, but things like bread, cake, cookies, nutrition bars, griddle cakes, and so on) are both highly abuseable for most folks and also very high energy density, making it harder to manage the Comfort Zone skills required to be successful on Core. For this reason, my .02 is to practice Core by counting points for all bakery items, even if made entirely of Core ingts, especially in the beginning. And really consider what you gain from not counting points for these items. We get 35 WPA plus APs each week. If you don't count Core-ingt bakery items, what will you "spend" your points on? If it's not a healthy and nutritious choice, that's another reason to consider "pointing" your Core-ingt bakery goods. Just my .02, and YMMV, and yes, technically WW has said Core + Core = Core. I merely advocate knowing yourself, understanding the science, and thinking this through for yourself with some objectivity.

The reason that I have switched to CORE is that I have issues with baked goods and breads. If I know that I, by myself, am restricting those items, I believe I will do a better job of eating how I know I should. I agree totally with this post.

I agree with all of you! The reason I love core is the health factor. When I counted points I would save them for the junk and not use them on fruits, milks, etc. Heaven forbid I eat a whole banana!! I've never tried the baked oatmeal, prefer mine in a bowl, but I wasted time making black bean brownies once. EEEWWWWWWW!!!!! Even the WW cakes are a trigger food for me! I'm better off without "free" sweets.....WPAs are there for a reason. If I don't want to use them on a particular item , I don't need that particular item!

I have gotten to where I am eating some sorts of sweets, and often. However, when I make something, I'm really good to know when to stop. I don't necessarily call it core, but I don't tell myself that I can have all that I want of it. It's a treat, not a meal. Like I've said before, I keep in the back of my mind that calories still count and that's enough to stop me from overdoing it. However, having substitutions for the foods that I used to eat help me to stay on plan--that makes me think that I could stay on it for the rest of my life, rather than getting off program when I get to goal.
I do realize that this is a viewpoint that most people don't share, and I definately understand why! This is an easy thing to take too far. If I weren't losing weight, I might step back and re-evaluate, but it's working for me. But just because it works for me doesn't mean it will work for everyone. I just had to throw my two cents in.
